Aku no Hana
Were this a recreation of the entire events of the manga it would've been an easy 8 or 9. I love the weight of the animation and the deliberate glacial pace. It makes it all the more frustrating that we're never getting a season 2 to bring some closure to what is literally only one third to one half of the story. There's so much potential here; so much of this production was daring, and it makes me angry that this is what gets rejected in the modern marketplace. It's a damn shame.

It's another early anime that I'd probably peg a little lower were I to watch it today (I may have originally scored it an 8 before bumping it to a 7, though). It's quite pretty, though, and as I recall surprisingly restrained, especially to be a horror anime.

Dies Irae
The first few episodes were engaging in a trashy, intoxicating kind of way. Lots of characters and esoteric syncretic nonsense with earth-shattering stakes for a world/setting I really don't care about. But it reaches a holding pattern even as the MCs have some character growth/development. There's not much interesting to grasp on to, just a steady stream of new information all the way to the end, even for nominal endings of character arcs. I don't know how I'm supposed to judge anyone's power or ability, either, which made the battles less interesting; I don't need a whole point system or nothing, but it would be nice to feel like Ren was in some reasonable amount of danger or that anyone had a chance of defeating the magic time nazis.

Elfen Lied
Definitely influenced by state of mind. It has lots of faults, but it is one of my favourites because of what it tried to do. Of course, Shiki did it better, but there's something about Lucy and the Diclonius that I like more than the vampires. Perhaps it's just an imprinting on one of my first exposures to bold (or at least loud) design.

Should have been longer. Too much that I wanted to be developed (especially with the CEO lady [number 10?]), and also possibly the other Selecao. I don't really care that much what happens after Akira becomes a prince. I have a feeling the films may expand more on some of the characters, but I doubt it's going to give more of the cool stuff the Selecao can do with their money... and although it makes sense, it was just cool to watch!

curious to see where this goes and what themes emerge. the "heroes solve a difficult situation with techniques the audience was hitherto unaware of" trope doesn't have me incredibly hopeful, but the cast is well balanced and the adversity at this point (6 episodes in) is somewhat interesting.

No Game No Life
Too many naked women. The premise is interesting and the art is nice and cheery with lots of bloom, but the blandness of the main character(s) (virgin NEET, wants to see naked women but afraid of sex/actual naked women?) and the immense amount of nudity ruins anything this show had going for it.

The addition of the preview of the next (real) film is useless and an artefact from its time; the full film came out just months later and contained full episodes of 25 and 26. The twenty or so minutes here aren't even worth watching, as they're duplicated in The End of Evangelion. |

Summer Wars
One of the first anime-styled animations I watched. May be inflated because of that. Regardless, the quality of animation was superb. Don't really want to re-watch it to re-rate it, but maybe I will someday. Probably not, though. It'd probably end up as a 6. I'm not changing it unless I do, though.
rewatched 9/7/14 - Not bad. Animation is great, story is okay, not quite as great compared to the better stuff I've seen. |

Why did this get another season? Why did it get a spin-off? It was a cool idea that was ruined by anime cliches and a half-assed, under-developed shounen storyline. And my god, is Touma an annoying standard main guy character. At least he isn't pervy. Docked one point for inclusion of a beach episode. Was going to give it a 5, but decided excessive mediocrity shouldn't be 'average'. So, 4, down to 3 for the skimpy beach outing.

Trigun
Just... boring. The anime tropes got to me as well. I'm sick of women hitting men for comedy, or otherwise getting angry at them for doing things or not doing things or things they have no control over.
I can see why there were 26 episodes, to build up relationships between characters (or basically between Millie and Meryl and Vash and eventually Wolfwold), but it could've been condensed. Unfortunately it's either 11-13 or 26 episodes. Eureka Seven suffered from the same issue, although it also had other problems. Trigun's ending was pretty anticlimatic, too. The main antagonist was presented a whole what, 3/4 of the way into the anime? I just finished Requiem from the Darkness and I don't like when it feels so rushed like that. Going from no primary antagonist and not even some collective or 'false' antagonist... just a bunch of one-offs, and then all of a sudden there's plot for several episodes. I'm not a fan. It's gorgeous. The locations, the way they're drawn and framed, it's so pretty. A cute lil love story in there too. The slightly larger cast, which includes more motivated and complex people, than the original makes it more engaging. I hate the strobe moments, but that effect is used so much less than in the original.

Yu☆Gi☆Oh! 5D's
Would've been a 5 or 6 if it were shorter. Highly scripted duels (lucky draws abound) aren't very realistic, but do make for good action and suspense. The main character never loses, though. Not once. The plot is set up so that every duel is life-or-death, so there's no real chance for him to be human.
Jack was cool, although I think his character would've been more interesting as a woman. Modern day feminist fighting with power rather than Yusei's finesse or whatever. Aki and Ruka, the lone recurring women (up until the end) never get to duel, and Aki wins I think one duel total. Rua doesn't progress all that much, but his duels at least are the most realistic. He's the only other main character who loses, aside from some one-offs with Jack and Crow (Jack only ever lost to Yusei, really). Anyway, the Japanese 'uncensored' version is much better than anything 4Kids has put out, and it's been updated as much as GX was from Duel Monsters, which is nice to see. The Synchro era from Yugioh was probably the best time for the card game, and the show got a boost from that; nowadays there are actual cards that can do all the ridiculous stunts that were pulled in the scripted anime duels. I liked it. It was enjoyable. But I also watched it at 2.5x speed, which definitely had an effect on the entertainment value. I think four 26 episode seasons would've been about right (and that's still 100 episodes - more than I prefer). The ending actually left me with some closure, without being too drawn-out. Granted, it was pretty simplistic, but a great improvement upon the other two series. There's a sense that not everything just goes back to normal, that the events which have happened actually had an impact on the world, and the characters. Yes, it's an overly optimistic happy ending, but it's about as good as I could expect from a shounen. There's not much to gain from watching it again, and due to its length, that wouldn't be very viable any way. These long anime never bother to be story-based and have ever-progressing character development - unlike long books. All in all, a decent show (4 is not 'bad', it's slightly below average), and the best showing I've seen from Yugioh so far. Downloaded Episodes: 154 |

Yu☆Gi☆Oh! Duel Monsters
Slow slow slow. The last season/arc that takes place in ancient Egypt with hardly any dueling threw things to a screeching halt. I just recently got my hands on the original subbed, so maybe I'll give that a shot if I ever have that much time to waste. It seems less stupid than the dub, although I doubt it'd be enough to redeem the show. 2/20/15
