For All Ahh My Goddess related material - watch it. It's honestly not girly, the characters are fantastic, and it's immensely satisfying to watch on just about every level. The best part is, the main character has what I would describe as inverse-Shinji syndrome. He ~literally~ is like the most unlucky person on the planet, but instead of bitching and whining, he just takes it like a champ and never complains. In fact, it can get a little sickening at how much better of a person he is than you. But seriously. Watch this, and all related series.

It's been a while, so I only have vague impressions left to review this on. Overall, the love story isn't bad, and I think a lot of people could get into it. In fact, a lot of people do, citing this as one of the classics. For me though, I just can't get into girls like Ai. She's too...unquestioningly devoted. It's weird. Also, I would have like to see a little more about this dark past that's haunting the male lead, but it seems that the show already dealt with it and moved on. I guess to me, the relationship just didn't exactly feel real. Everything was just too perfect in a way.

Akame ga Kill!
Pretty conflicted about this one. The animation is stellar, and the story is pretty good. However, it can't figure out if it wants to be serious or a comedy. There are really deep, painful moments followed literally immediately with slapstick humor without any transition whatsoever, and it ends up trivializing the serious stuff and making the jokes seem really out of place. It's unfortunate, because I think this could have been a great show, but the characters come off bizarre and unrelatable, and major deaths are basically just glossed over, with characters either not reacting at all, or their reactions are crammed in to a random spot in another episode.

So conflicted about how to score this. For 11.9 episodes this was an easy 8/10. It could have even been a 9 depending on the direction they took. It has a fairly interesting premise, characters that are entertaining to watch, and great animation. The fight scenes are particularly well done, as we get to see Inaho's inherent genius as a strategist come to light. Unfortunately, in the last seconds of the 12th episode, they chose a plot twist that could VERY easily turn this excellent show to complete shit. I will withhold judgement until the next season, but honestly you may want to hold off watching this until the next season starts and people figure out if it is even worth watching any more.

A show that I wasn't very sure about at first, but I found myself laughing and having a great time almost right away. what was even more weird, despite being very lighthearted and silly for most of the show, in the end you get some serious feels and don't know where the came from. Show does a good job of getting you attached to characters without realizing it

Baccano!
You'll probably be confused in the beginning. This show has a crazy, nonlinear plot that jumps around by YEARS at a time, and a huge cast of characters that it simply throws at you right from the beginning. But even though the story moves along at breakneck speed without ever pausing long enough for you to say "Huh?" it's well-developed enough to keep you into it. However where this show really shines is in its characters. Simply watch the opening sequences and you'll think it'll be impossible for me to remember, let alone connect with, all these characters in the short 13 episodes of the series. Yet somehow, perhaps through the minimal use of superfluous side characters, every one of the multitude of main characters is developed in a satisfying way, and no one really gets left out. This was the thing that impressed me most about the series. Every second of screen time is dedicated to developing a characters personality, so that as they grow and change throughout the course of the show you actually feel invested. Furthermore, there is a satisfying amount of romance, and each of the four couples has a unique dynamic, from silly to heartwarming to downright creepy. The only reason this wasn't a ten was the couple of minor plot points that didn't get developed (what the hell did he wish for?) but overall this was a fantastic show and DEFINITELY worth watching.

Ninjas, ninjas, and more ninjas, every one more badass than the last. Show runs into a few problems, like having waaaaay to many characters in the beginning to be able to seriously connect with some of the early deaths, but it was quite good in never really telling you which side to root for. Very dark in a sort of "everybody is partly evil" sort of way.

Watch for the Cure to Post-Bebop blues, but be warned the second round of blues will follow right after. Show has a very similar feel -outlaws taking whatever jobs come there way to make money, no matter how distasteful. The real joy is in the relationship between Rock and Rekky. He's cool, laid back, white collar, a pretty normal guy with spurts of serious badassness, while she is the craziest motherfucker on the face of the earth, who I by episode 2 I was convinved had a form of Tourettes that caused her to yell FUCK every other word. She's an example of how to use vulgarity right in a show (see Gantz for how to royally screw it up). Very, very entertaining show, whyyyyyyy couldn't it have kept going?????

A lot like a shorter version of Kanojo's Pet. The story isn't anything special, and the two main love interests were pretty average, all things considered. I did like how the MC had a very grounded attitude about all the weird people living around him.
The two things that really make this show are the side characters and the comedy. The ridiculousness of the other tenants both fascinating and funny. The all have extreme personalities and overreact to just about everything, but there are moments when the show that they can act like actual humans too. Everyone really lives their lives to the fullest and embraces the stuff that makes them weird, and it's really fun to watch. The jokes were awesome as well. It's at times really mature and overtly sexual, so if you can't get into that this isn't for you, but it had me in stitches.
It's main shortcoming was that it's to short, and you don't get to see the relationship advance to a satisfying level. Still, definitely worth a watch if you like mature comedy

Not your typical love story. 5 cm/s takes a brutally realistic look at what love is like in the real world when circumstances split people up. There are no crazy dramatic fights, heroic gestures to save the girl, or surprise happy endings despite incredible odds. Its just a really painful story about a guy who falls in love with something who life won't let him be with. Beautiful animated, powerful story, but it was quite depressing, knowing what the MC was going through.

It's not like it wasn't entertaining, but the plot was a mess (because they assume you've read the manga they skip over lots of important details). They also get REALLY into making out. Like basically softcore porn. The funny thing was instead of just like accepting that was what was going on, they come up with some half-baked explanation for why the MC needs to make out with every girl multiple times an episode. Fight scenes were fairly good, but the pseudo greek god history lesson in the middle of all of them was annoying.

Corpse Party: Tortured Souls - Bougyakusareta Tamashii no Jukyou
This one is meant for a very specific audience. If you're looking for something meaningful with a good plot and character development....this isn't for you. However, if you want to watch a brutal horror flick, you've come to the right place.
Corpse party is 100% an anime slasher film. It is horror in it's most basic sense. There's not really too much in the way of jump scares and cheap gags, instead the show focuses on atmosphere and really, Really, REALLY vivid ways of killing people. It leaves virtually nothing to the imagination. Middle and high school students and killed right in front of your eyes in horrible ways. I don't think a show has ever been so aptly named.
Basically, read the title, and if that sounds appealing to you, then go for it. Frankly, I found this one pretty disgusting and cruel, but who knows, people might be into that sort of thing. Wanted to give it lower, but because of how much effort the staff put in to making me uncomfortable, it deserves at least a passing grade.

Unique in that for the majority of the show, there's no plot to speak of. Instead the show focuses on isolated events that happens to a crew of bounty hunters as they fly around the galaxy trying to make ends meet. The result is a focus on the characters themselves instead of what they're doing, and it leads to some really awesome character development. Bebop crews some of the most interesting characters in anime, and they really carry the show. At the same time, late in the show when a real plot starts to take shape, there are several incredibly powerful episodes. If you miss firefly and serenity, this might do it for you.

Deadman Wonderland
Death row inmates with the ability to manipulate their own blood outside their bodies are forced to fight each other for the entertainment of others. If this sounds a lot like Death Race or Undisputed, that's because it is. Deadman is a show with some really cool looking fight sequences with a whole lot of blood and cursing. While that sort of gratutitiveness isn't nearly as effective as in Elfen Lied or Black Lagoon, it doesn't fall flat on it's face like in Gantz.
The biggest problem with the show was that it seemed that all the time went into making it look neat, and everything else was treated as an afterthought. The plot is predictable and absolutely nothing resolves. The music is sub par. The speeches are cringe worthy on an almost episodic basis.
One thing I was on the fence about was the characters. The main guy is pretty whiny and has a bad habit of crying a lot. In fact, he's quite reminiscent of Shinji (Evangelion) except that he has a much better reason for being pathetic. So overall I didn't hate him all that much (unlike Shinji, who deserved a swift kick to the crotch), rather he was only a little annoying. His female counterpart was satisfyingly unique and energetic, a nice change from the mysterious, emotionless robots that usually fill her spot. Also, special mention for Crow, who is a patented badass who's tough not to at least be entertained by. Everyone else, however, is cookie cutter.
While I can't say that Deadman was a bad show, I certainly won't say it was good either. I just didn't feel invested in any of the characters. Traumatic things happen so often to so many characters that you just begin to feel numb about it. Also, death sequences for many characters that literally never even got names are drawn out for inexplicable reasons. Why should we care about this faceless guy's last moments when he literally hadn't said a word until then? Oh well. Fans of the genre will be content if they don't delve to deep, but anyone else shouldn't bother.

DNA²
One of the more ridiculous premises I've seen. A guy who has a complex that makes him throw up whenever anything remotely sexual happens to him gains the power to inadvertently seduce any woman he meets. Also, there's a time traveling bimbo trying to stop him from seducing people because apparently his powers get so out of hand that he has too many kids and the world gets overpopulated. Yeah. The humor is really juvenile, with most of it being vomit, fart, and slapstick jokes, which I am really not a fan of. The basic nature of the main characters powers also leads to really obvious plot developments that you can see coming from a mile away. However, if you can get past its obvious flaws and low brow humor, there is a surprising amount of real depth to the show that's easy to miss at first glance. It's hard to give DNAA a strong recommendation, because of its very specific comedic niche, but if that's what you're into or you're dedicated enough to look past it, this show is worth the watch.

A lot more action based than the series, and the satisfying ending that the season had was taken apart in the OVA. Overall, the OVA seemed to take away some of the charm that the series had. I was even missing the vomit gags that had been such a huge part of the series. The OVA feels like a totally different series. While the main series didn't take itself very seriously, which was part of the charm, this did, yet somehow managed to have less depth. A little disappointing overall. Elfen Lied
Hope you've got a strong stomach. This show gets real. The opening 6 minutes are the most intense of any anime I've seen. And while it does cool off a bit, it's only a bit. This is a show about the darkest corners of the human psyche, and there's some messed up stuff that goes on. So why does it have a perfect ranking? It's not (entirely) because I'm just a depraved heathen. Elfen Lied uses its violence to make clear points about humanity, and is really effective in showing how traumatic events can affect relationships. It's so much more than a grindhouse fanservice. It's a complete show, through and through. Lucy in particular is fantastic to watch, as she can go from innocent child to psychopathic serial killer literally in the blink of an eye. The show manages satisfying back story despite it's length, so that all the major characters have real tangible motivations. Also, the way of telling the story is very effective, as some of the characters' murky pasts remain a mystery for much of the show, so that the big reveals are staggered and keep the viewer enthralled throughout each and every episode.

Gokukoku no Brynhildr
Pretty disappointed in this one. From the writer and studio that created Elfen Lied, and with a fairly large budget, I think it was reasonable to expect good things. The animation quality is fantastic, and the characters are likable enough, unfortunately the plot is...terrible. Maybe terrible is harsh, after all, its almost identical to Elfen Lied. Super powered girls are created in a lab by a shady organization, escape, and end up in a harem with a high schooler. One of the biggest problems is that it is so similar that they had to throw in a lot of stupid shit to try and distinguish it from its predecessor. Also, the powers that the girls have were basically designed to be deus ex machinas. You can essentially predict the entire show once you meet most of the girls. Overall, I think I went into this show with too high of expectations, due to its pedigree, and was very disappointed

Great Teacher Onizuka
I can't believe how long this show flew below my radar. Onizuka is voiced by Spike Seagal from Cowboy Bebop, and that should be enough for you right there. If it's not, this is a show that's a lot like watching Dead Poets Society, If there was an individual lesson for each kid, you spent every episode holding your sides in fits of giggles, and Robin Williams was a 22 year old, ex-biker gang leader, 2nd degree black belt, virgin, perverted certified badass. Each problem get in the class gets their own story arc to fix whatever is going on in their life, and what starts out as a class of degenerate teacher haters slowly turns into a loyal group of good people. While each of the students is unique in their own way, and the staff is entertaining, every single scene is made exponentially more exciting, funny, interesting, etc. whenever Onizuka is around. My favorite character in any show so far.

Sort of like Berserk, but in the future and with gangsters instead of knights. It's basically the story of one guy trying to help his best friend make it to the top of the food chain. There is some really interesting character development here, my only issue was that it was slow sometimes, and that it ends basically how every gang movie/series does.

Gunslinger Girl
A supposed public service group in Italy seeks out orphaned young girls and turns them into elite killer cyborgs to assassinate anyone who opposes the government. Admittedly, the style takes a little getting used to. Despite the intense action that happens for a short time every episode, I though that some of the episodes, especially towards the beginning, really dragged on. I was also annoyed by the introduction of the main character, Henrietta, followed by 4 consecutive episodes where she was hardly even shown, as the show delves into the back story of each of the other cyborg-handler teams. Going about it this way, changing perspective every episode and following a different character, felt really inefficient and tedious at first, however in the second half of the series it really pays off. Because the show took the time in the beginning to give us really detailed back stories, the danger that the girls and there handlers are put in becomes a lot more real and interesting. Also, this is a show where it really feels like no one is "safe" - that is, at any point you feel as though a character could be killed off. However, the best quality of this show is the character development. There are caring handlers, handlers who view cyborgs as a simple tool, cyborgs who adore their handlers, and cyborgs who look at their situation as simply a job. There are a lot of really interesting conflicts that stem, not from a particular incident, but just from personalities butting up against each other. Also, throughout the course of the series, Gunslinger Girl explores what it means to be a cyborg, whether the cyborgs are still human at all, and how much free will they really have. Each character's unique personality and the difficult philosophical questions brought up by the show eventually turn it into a very solid series, despite a somewhat sluggish feel. Highly recommended if you enjoyed Noir, and maybe Canaan as well.

Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino
I was a little less impressed by this season. Where in the first, I could convince myself that Henrietta was the main character, in the second season, at best it could be said that the story shifted onto another character, at worst, that there really wasn't a main character at all, and that the story jumped perspectives almost every episode. Despite this, season 2 retained many of the good qualities of season 1. Most importantly, the character development was still very good. Furthermore, there were very interesting segments into the life of the "bad guys" which lent a lot of perspective to the series and managed to show that there really are no fully good or bad sides. We find ourselves sympathizing in some way with terrorists and bomb makers, while questioning the motives of Section 2. Really, the most aggravating part of season 2 to me was the lack of focus on Henrietta, who seemed to simply be forgotten about in the second half of the season. A little frustrating when season 1 was -somewhat- centered around her. Still worth the watch though.

Gratuitous violence and confusing plot, but overall still decent. Not jumping on the fanboy bandwagon yet, as I got the feeling towards the end that when the big reveal final happened, I was going to be disappointed. Lost some points for literally not resolving anything at all in the first season. Hoping season 2 doesnt disappoint. Be warned, this series is a grindhouse. Some REALLY intense scenes of violence, some of it to really young girls, that was really only made bearable by the fact that as the series goes on, you become numb to the shock value.

Hitsugi no Chaika
Pretty standard adventure story. Basically, it's interesting enough and has enough action to keep you watching, but several things hold it back.
There's not enough focus on the MC. There are huge chunks of episodes where you're following one of the other groups involved in the adventure, and while back story on side characters is important, I didn't think the side characters were unique or interesting enough to warrant serious screen time. Nothing really happens in these 10 minutes chunks that couldn't have been easily summed up in a minute or two, which would allow for more time with the MC, who is really the only dynamic character. I honestly don't think it's a big deal that they use such generic side characters, just don't make me sit through 10 minutes of story per episode that I just don't care about.
That's probably the biggest issue: nothing really stands out. Nothing in the show is something that hasn't been done a bunch before, so no matter how well done it is, I can never get overly excited about it.
Recommended for fans of adventure series. It comes off as a worse version of Scrapped Princess. It should provide some mild entertainment, just don't get your hopes too high.

Pretty weird concept- basically like Gundam but if the pilots were also vampires, and also if one of the factions was composed entirely of high schoolers. Personally, I thought it was kind of a mess, with the focus changing all the time. Sometimes its "is it ok to live if you have to feed on people" then that basically goes away, then its "can we really handle running a country"...it just seemed like they couldn't settle on what they wanted to major question of the show to be. That being said, every time I was about to give up it redeemed itself enough that I wanted to see what happened next. If you really like mechas, this is worth a shot. It has good animation and puts an interesting twist on a pretty worn out story.

Kakumeiki Valvrave 2nd Season
There is a dramatic shift in the quality of the story in the second season of valvrave. Simply put, shit goes down. The series takes a sudden turn to some very dark plots, which honestly I thought were handled very well. While in the first season, in general you never really felt like any main characters were in major peril of getting bumped off, in the second there is a very real sense that anyone could go out at any time, and many do (which is sorta classic mecha). Also, with a certain revelation early in the series, you get a sense that you are heading inevitably toward a tragic ending, which really adds to the suspense. It also really attempts to expand and elaborate on more of all the characters different stories, which just made you feel that much more invested in what was happening to them.
It does still have its share of problems. Some backstories seem rushed or not fully explained, some plot points and relationships between characters were never returned to, despite hints that they should have been important, and a few other minor things.
The ending is what I'm most torn about. Certain aspects of it were really well done, and you get a pretty strong emotional response from it. But it felt like a lot of things were left unfinished (who knows maybe that was the point) and sometimes it was downright cheesy.
Overall, if you made it through season 1, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised by how it turned out.

Katanagatari
What a unique show. This may be best best characterized as an adventure story, but ultimately it had elements of just about everything in it. There was lots of comedy, a budding romance, action, history, and psychology in just about every episode. That being said, there are a couple things I want to clear up. The show was pitched to me as a badass action show with incredible art. This is really not the case. While there certainly is action, except for the last episode there's an average of about 5 minutes of action per 50 minute episode. Calling this an action-focused series is like calling FMA:B a romance. While it certainly is present in the show, it's more of a brief highlight than an integral part of the show. In fact, they go so far to insist this in the show that the DON"T EVEN SHOW the battle to become the strongest in Japan. They simply talk about how cool it was, without a single flashback. The standard formula for important battles in Katanagatari is to show the buildup, show some less serious moves, then have people announce their ultimate attack....and cut to the aftermath of Yasuri holding the victory prize. If that doesn't tell you the action isn't important, I don't know what will. Also. people love to rave about the art. Frankly, all I can say is it's not bad. Above average even, but really nothing to get worked up over. Yes, I get that it was hand drawn over a month, but so what? It might be impressive from a technical standpoint but it won't help your enjoyment of the show.
Those things aside, this really did have a lot of really good things going for it. A sort of goofy, cute attitude dominates the show, but it's really just a thin veil that hides a lot of really dark and serious things just behind. Probably my favorite part of the show is that it doesn't shove the inner struggles and conflicts the characters have in your face. It may seem that Yasuri is totally unfeeling, but as the show progresses and by watching gestures and listening to the language, you can see him have difficulties with certain things, and he really grows as a character and becomes more human throughout. Certainly many major events in the show are incredibly painful for him, but Katanagatari doesn't just outright tell you that, you have to pay attention. He reminds a bit of Ein from Phantom-someone raised as a weapon who is learning how to be a person. This hidden internal struggle is present for many of the characters in the series. Characterization is the shows main strength. As such, expect lots of dialogue. The enjoyment you get out of this is directly correlated with how much you pay attention.
This was real close to getting a perfect score. It finishes incredibly strong. However, there are some early episodes which at some points drag on a bit. They lose themselves in tedious details occasionally and it gets a little frustrating. Docked one for that, but otherwise, a great watch,

There's a love triangle, a political squabble, and some other things, but honestly Guts doesn't care about those tings, so why should we? However, this show really sets itself apart with one of the most graphic, messed up endings I've seen. And it's incredible. It's like watching a trainwreck that you just can't look away from. I thought this actually started out ok, and showed a bit of promise despite the fact that for some reason, post apocalyptic earth is run entirely by highschoolers, in that I was at least interested enough to keep watching. Hard to say why though, as nothing they do is particularly well done, and some parts are just plain bad. They use stale character archetypes, have characters who totally flip what their core values are on a whim, the main story is fairly uninspired, and the side plots are downright unintelligible. Honestly I think the only thing it really had going for it was some decent choreography in the action sequences, but even there, sometimes they only show the beginning of a battle and just leave the rest to your imagination to figure out how it was won.
Also, special mention for the truly terrible ending. It's not even that I thought the story in general should have gone in another direction-it's that the tried so hard to make it a cool ending that it ends up being absurd, cliched, and cringe-inducing.
Hard to recommend this one even to hardcore fans of action-harems

A show that couldn't decide if it wanted to be silly or serious, and ends up flip flopping with zero transition between the two. Sometimes full filler episodes are dedicated to humor, sometimes there are full episodes with hardly a joke. Its even worse in the episodes that try to do both, because jokes and gags get needlessly inserted into serious scenes, essentially ruining any drama the scene may have had. What's more, I found the two main characters to be rather flat and boring, and the characters that could have been interesting, namely the staff and the associated lords, were given hardly any development. This didn't necessarily have to be a problem if they were in the show for purely comic relief, but we are routinely subjected to deaths and "intense" situations where we are obviously supposed to care what happens to the totally one dimensional side character, whose back story was hurriedly rushed in right before they were put into a life threatening situation. Even though I found the end, standing alone, to be fairly competent, it didn't mesh well at all with the rest of the series. For me, there is absolutely no reason to continue this series, as the next season will, by virtue of how season 1 ended, necessitate a whole new cast of flimsy characters that I, once again, will probably not care about at all.

Mawaru Penguindrum
I'm not sure where to start with this show. I suppose with a really over simplified version of what (I think) the plot was. It's essentially the adventures of two brothers, their sister, and a weird stalker girl as they try and change, or fulfill their respective destinies. However, it's really much more than that.
At the conclusion of Penguindrum, I was reminded of how I felt while watching FLCL, that is, I had no idea what I had just watched. You get a general sense of the plot, but really, it would take several more rewatches, in my opinion, to understand every important detail of the story. The plot moves at a lightning fast past, jumping around often without any explanation. There are characters whose motivations aren't revealed until 20 episodes in, who spend those 20 episodes messing with people seemingly at random. The most confusing part is that their are several scenes an episode that take place entirely outside of whatever dimension the characters are living in. Is it a dream? Is it another dimension? Is it all just a metaphor? Your guess is as good as mine.
Despite all this, I did enjoy the show. The plot, while confusing as hell, had really powerful moments in it that I wasn't prepared for in a show that at first seems to sell itself as being a silly slice of life comedy. The characters, while perhaps not being the most unique archetypes, had a lot of depth. The numerous shadowy characters looming over the plot gave me something to really be interested in aside from the strange loves triangles. Also, this just has to be said, the animation quality is fantastic.
Overall, I give this an uneasy recommendation. There will be plenty of people who will hate it, which is understandable. Like I said, it doesn't make a lot of sense the first time around. However, there is a lot of depth if you are willing to look for it. Just be ready with the fast forward button, that song gets old REAL fast. You'll know which one I mean.

It's like City of God, but made by the studio who did Samurai Champloo. Great characters, beautiful art, fantastic music. Plot is probably the weakest point, but really it's fine. Mostly about the relationship between Michiko and Hatchin, but there is a healthy dose of action.

Mirai Nikki (TV)
I feel like I shouldn't rate this so high. I absolutely hated certain parts of this show, especially how schizophrenic the character development was. Sometimes when I was was consecutive episodes, I had to go back to make sure I didn't skip anything, because it was like people's personalities had completely changed. I get it for the chick, I mean, half the draw of the show is that she's batshit crazy. But that doesn't mean you've got to do it to the rest of the cast as well. Also, the main characters suffers from Shinji syndrome (my way of saying he's a baby-backed bitch who cries a lot) which I hate. On top of that, the plot get really unnecessarily complex towards the end and makes it hard to figure out what you're supposed to be hoping for or worried about. Enough bashing though. I'm guessing at least part of what I'm complaining about is intentional, to complement the psychotic nature of that pink-haired girl.
Anyways, everyone else seems to love it, and it does have some pretty spectacular violence, as well as a crazy fast paced plot. Entertaining for sure, just don't look to hard for holes, because you'll find them,

Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom
The story of two of the world's top assassins working the the underground's most notorious gang, Inferno.
Really enjoyed the majority of this series. I've chosen to score it based on the 99% of the show that was absolutely excellent, and ignore the controversial last two minutes of the show. Overall, the best description I can make of the show is that it is Darker than 'Darker than Black'. It has a lot of similar plot elements (working in a merciless underworld for a shady, mysterious organization, really badass main character(s), even going on the run from the organization and taking in a young orphaned kid).
The biggest difference between the shows, in my opinion, the the oppressive hopelessness that pervades Requiem. There is this overwhelming feeling in Requiem of never being to escape the life of an assassin, and that even if you could escape, the things you have done would mean that there is no place for you in the world.
I found the animation quality to be great, and the action scenes smooth an satisfying. In terms of character development, there are really only 3 or 4 people that really change over time, but they do a very good job with those 4. Even though this is very much an action series, there are some very powerful moments in the show (unfortunately, these moments are almost exclusively REALLY dark).

In the end, despite a final scene that kind of left me with a sour taste in my mouth, I was extremely happy to have found this anime. If you enjoyed DTB (and to a lesser extent shows like Canaan, Noir, etc. for the duo assassin element), you've got to watch this show.

Surprisingly good, for a show about space garbage men. Characters all feel very real, more so than most shows. There's also a ton of meta in the show, parallels between characters, metaphors about the human condition, and all sorts of other high minded stuff. I can definitely appreciate the effort that got put into it. To me, the reason that it's not a 9 or 10 was that I watch shows to be entertained, not philosophize. I'm certainly not saying that the show wasn't entertaining or intellectually stimulating, but it just wasn't quite what I look for in a series. I think that to a certain type of viewer, however, this show could be an instant classic.

You can pretty much see everything coming from the first episode, but that doesn't make it bad. The funny thing is, despite a simple and fairly common plot, and with characters which are also fairly cookie cutter, the show does very well. It doesn't make an impact with twists or story, instead it just does a really good job making those scenes, which everyone knows are coming, very powerful. A lot like Angel Beats, but it doesn't start off like a joke. Pretty mature throughout the whole series

I'm appalled at how many people have never heard of this show. It has thought provoking plot, like a toned down Evangelion (and it's got the mechs to go with), some excellent characters and character development, and a really good blend of comedy. Perhaps the most impressive thing about the show is the working in of mechs into what is essentially the dark ages, without it feeling awkward or forced. The plot really does tie everything in with having to go to ridiculous and unbelievable lengths. If you liked Evangelion, Samurai 7, Full Metal Panic, or really anything that combines mechs with an actually plot, watch this show

A pretty weak 7. It draws you in with some really cool action and a fast paced plot, and then slows down to a crawl. It's not that it is especially bad, it was just pretty bland. I felt a little lied to, like the first two or three episodes were promising a fast paced action thriller, and what it turned out to be was a rather uninteresting story about growing up. Really, its only real draw is a few really well done fight scenes, but these are so few and far between that it is probably more worthwhile to just youtube them, and skip the rest.

References. References everywhere. In a lot of ways, the enjoyment you'll get is directly proportional to how many of the anime references they make you understand, and they make a lot. It's pretty much straight parody-mostly slice of life/harem/drama but they don't mind making fun of other genres.
Truthfully, I never really got into parodies, and was turned off almost entirely when I watched School Rumble, which had such promising moments but then intentionally(?) destroyed itself towards the end. In my opinion, parody is a useful comedic tool, but it shouldn't be used as an excuse to butcher a good story and character development.
For Ichizon, it's a little to heavy on the parody for my taste. However, while there's virtually no plot (90%) sitting in one room and making fun of each other), there is a decent amount of character development. Even though the characters themselves are parodies, they eventually give sufficient back story for you to feel invested in what happens to them.
My concern is that eventually itll take the School Rumble route, and and more and more ridiculous things until it simply doesn't make sense anymore. For now at least, at the end of season 1, it should provide anime veterans, if not excitement, then at least some entertainment.

Well...I don't know. If I were looking at this objectively this show would probably get scored even lower, but there are things about it that I liked. So, first of all, you've REALLY got to like harems to get into this show. It's absurd how many idiotic girls this idiotic show throws at this idiotic guy. The one redeeming thing this show has is that the guy ends up with the girl that you will (probably) root for. But really, the rest of the show is crap. There were 3 or 4 times I thought about giving up on it completely, but each time they caught me with something just compelling enough to stay to see how it turned out. Really well done, I found myself actually laughing out loud in a way that few shows ever make me do. It really tries to wrap up just about all the loose ends, and give everybody enough of a story that you care about what happens to them. "Psh, time travel? When's the last time that worked for anyone?" - I thought to myself self as I started this show. "PLEASE, I NEED MORE, JUST ONE MORE EPISODE, A MOVIE, ANYTHING" -I screamed at my laptop the moment I finished the show. Then I realized I had been sitting, riveted in one place for the last 9 hours marathoning this show, and promptly passed out. I have yet to meet someone who's finished this show and not immediately put it in their top 10 of all time. If it feels slow at the beginning, it is, but trust me. Stick around, shit gets real, and you'll feel like if you put your laptop down for a second the universe might fall apart. The show, almost out of nowhere, goes from a lighthearted, cheerful, easy going episodic comedy to a dark, lightning fast, complicated drama so fast it'll leave you reeling. You'll find that somehow in those first 10 episodes, you've become really attached to these goofy losers, and the incredible tragedies that start spreading like wildfire to them are heart rending. To be fair, Okabe does take a little getting used to. In the beginning, I found him to be annoying as hell and embarrassing to watch, and yet very quickly, even while the story is still silly and he's acting like a mad scientist wannabe teenager, he becomes endearing, without really changing anything about himself, and for the life of me I don't know what happened. Another glowing attribute of this show is the rewatch value. You'll find in the first episode that there are many small events and conversations (and one big one) that doesn't seem to make any sense in the context of the show, and you soon brush most of them off, just like Okabe does. However, upon rewatching the series, you realize that each and every one of those tiny events is going to have huge repercussions later, and you'll geek out all over again. Final note-watch the OVA. It adds a spectacular ending to an already spectacular show.

Good points: good animation, some funny moments, decent choreography. Bad: Big plot holes, painfully cheesy dialogue, fairly creepy romance, and just a generally uninspired story until the end, where it seemed they were just desperate to create some sort of interesting twist

Very similar to a Studio Ghibli, honestly. You really do get run through the gauntlet of emotions. Overall, I think the most impressive thing was how well so many members of the massive cast were developed in such a short time. Great movie, definitely a must.

It had it's ups and downs. The plot is completely average and is a cookie cutter model of any generic drama. I can't really call it bad, but the predictability and lack of creativity made it boring.
The characters vary between cardboard cutout side characters to totally asinine mains. The main girl is aggravating as hell. I found myself actively rooting against her by about halfway through, and those feeling only got stronger the longer the show lasted. She's completely erratic, spending 95% of the show pushing this dude away and only showing interest when there's another chick who wants a shot. At first I was refreshed by the MCs attitude-there are several instances of him telling her to fuck off because of all the shit she puts him through, but he too turns out to be just another asshole. It is a rare drama that gets you to hate the main couple more than anyone else, so at least in that regard, its unique.
For real though, the way these two characters treat everyone else is absurd. Not sure if it was intentional by the writers, but if you actually end up liking either character, you are a special kind of douche.

Much, much darker than the seasons, but still incredible. Because it begins chronologically after season 2, it doesn't run into the same problems of character regression. character relationship and personalities begin as they were left off before (that is, actually developed). The movie ties in perfectly with the series, answering many of the questions that you had to have been left with after watching the first two season, while at the same time leaving a satisfying amount of mystery so that the story can continue. Which I cannot wait for.

In some of my other reviews I've proudly stated "I'm not jumping on this bandwagon" Well, I jumped on this one. HARD. This is one of the most unique shows I've ever watched, and it kept me hooked all the way through the last movie that came out. Really full, interesting characters that you can't not love, and a way of telling a story that will leave you feeling like an obese kid at dairy queen - you know you've stuffed yourself full, but you just want more. Highly recommend watching the season in Kyon order, except perhaps waiting to watch the actual movie they make until after the school festival episode. It'll let you become accustomed to the characters and really appreciate the jokes in the movie episode much more. Prepare to be launched headfirst into the turmoil of a world straight out of the mind of that weird girl who says she got abducted by aliens.

It's worth watching for the good episodes, but get your fast forward button ready for the endless 8 arc. Seriously, what were they thinking with that? Little frustrating to see character regression since the timeline for this is the same as season one, but characters are still themselves. Honestly, you can get through it but I'd recommend going straight to the movie

Tactics
Eh. This was about the least compelling a show can get for me to finish it. It was definitely a struggle, but not because of any blatant badness, more like there was just nothing interesting. The show is episodic, with each episode basically standing alone, which can be fine, as long as you have an interesting cast to keep viewers excited in the absence of a plot to push things along. The problem is that the lead in tactics is just boring. He has flashes of being interesting-sometimes he's devilishly clever, sometimes he seems super strong, sometimes he's really emotional, but all together those moments only make up about a tenth of his screen time. The rest of the time he's about as bland as you can get. And no one else is any better. Also, there are a couple of stories that are actually pretty compelling, but each one is only one episode that gets lost pretty easily among the 90% of mush that make up the rest of the show.

Fairly unique out of the shows I've seen thus far. EXTREMELY gritty and dark. Basically, the show is about what happens as human beings get closer to the end of their evolutionary end. However, you could be forgiven for not figuring that out at first, as the show is very confusing. It throws right into the middle without any kind of explanation, and characters appear and reappear seemingly at random. I was able to figure out pretty much what was going on midway through the show, but then towards the end shit got weird again. It reminded of the original ending to Evangelion, where you're never really sure if what's happening is just the character's imagination or is really happening. For me, while the animation quality was just so-so, the story and characters (when I could figure them out anyways) were deep enough and thought out well enough that I stayed interested. However, the thing that really prevents me from giving it too high of a score is that is was so damn depressing. Seriously, just super depressing. 10/10 if that's what you're into, but it wasn't for me.

Some more old school. Im not really on the bandwagon for "one of the best animes of all time." However, despite my best efforts to dislike this show (how could something this old still be relevent, and I hate Westerns) , I found myself pretty invested. When this came out, I'm sure it was quite good compared to everything else it was competing with. Unfortunately, watching in 2014, the animation looks dated, and the episodes while generally pretty good, tend to be drawn out, as if 15 minutes of content was stretch out to 22. It's a little frustrating, or boring, depending on your mood, to see still shots of background and scenery, or have long pauses in the middle of dialogue for no real reason. The story, despite its sluggishness, is solid, if not totally inspired, and the characters are all unique.
Altogether, I would say it's a decent anime that hasn't aged particularly well, and gets outshown by the newer anime in its genre

Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199
Very solid space adventure story. It did really well with developing most of its core characters without overdoing it in terms of flashbacks and getting sidetracked. The art is great, and you get a very real idea of the great loneliness and unforgiving nature of space.
The only real complaint I had with the show, and the reason it only gets 8, is that it sorta snubs the MCs best friend. When the show starts it appears that it'll be about the two of them journeying together, but really its only about Kodai. I felt that his friend (whose name I honestly can't remember, that's how little he ended up mattering) could have been a really interesting character. They had opportunities to give him relationships and importance, but ultimately all he does is sit in a chair. It sucked, because I actually liked him better than the MC. Not that their is anything wrong with Kodai, I just felt like the friend was more easy to relate to. Kodai has a pretty strong sense of duty and all his emotions are just super intense, while his buddy was more of a normal dude who occasionally did badass stuff when the need arose. Give him some screen time, a girl to talk to, and something heroic to do and I think you have basically the perfect space odyssey.
But that's really the only thing that wasn't great about this. The journey had me on the edge of my seat most of the time, the villains were interesting, and not just your standard evil, but with many levels of political intrigue and motivations. There are a lot of cool scenes where, even though they are fighting to save their planet from destruction from this empire, they will have interactions with individual generals and captains where its not about who's on what side, but about showing respect for fellow military personnel. Very interesting aspect that isn't often covered.
So overall, the missed one character, but otherwise a fantastic show for anyone who likes scifi and space.

Dock it some points if you really can't stand it when the main character freaks out, and you'll have to get used to the strange style - long, skinny legs and arms (think Jack Skellington), and a habit of having anyone who's not a main or side character only appear as an outline. But I was pleasantly surprised at how well the characters developed, and how each episode managed to stand on its own, while still building your understanding of each character.

Excellent animation and spectacular fight scenes. I think it's biggest weakness was that it chose to draw out a few plot points for several episodes, instead of deepening some of the periphery characters. There were a lot of characters, especially in the clan and in the military, for whom we only got vague backgrounds and a sort of ambiguous character archetype. However, it's not that these things bust the show. The main characters are done well enough to overlook some or the flatter side characters, and the overall story is good enough to overlook some of the little holes and fluff moments. A good show to be sure, but for me there were just a few too many minor issues to merit a 9 or 10.
