Both anime involve the Shinkansen heavily, though Hikarian has to work around copyrights a bit while Shinkalion is actually sponsored by JR and thus can use actual trains. Still, if you like trains and you want a fun mecha anime, you'll probably enjoy both shows. Shinkalion is more serious and plot-driven while Hikarian is wacky antics for the most part, but it does get serious when it wants to.
