Life hasn't been kind to Zenos. He was born in the slums, and his dirt-poor background has denied him almost every opportunity. After an encounter with a healer, he throws himself into studying to become one and finally catches a break when an adventurer invites Zenos into his party. Zenos is thrilled—so thrilled, in fact, that he's willing to put up with his teammates treating him like garbage. They fail to appreciate his talents and ultimately kick him to the curb, claiming he's outlived his usefulness to them.

Now bereft of money and out of options, Zenos decides to put his self-taught skills to use elsewhere and opens an underground clinic. Word quickly spreads about the brilliant healer working incredible magic in the city's shadowy underbelly. Even the royal palace is taking notice...

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (3/12 eps)

The Brilliant Healer's New Life in the Shadows tries to lure you in with a scrappy healer overcoming an apparent betrayal, but the mangled first three episodes from Studio Makaria feel like a half-baked pie. Based on a light novel, this adaptation follows a healer born in the slums who is abandoned by his party and opens a clinic in a slum for other outcasts. The underdog premise and cozy group have some charm. Still, the lazy writing, shallow depth, and shaky production make it a hard sell. Here's a breakdown of what works and doesn't work.

What Works: The core concept of a healer sticking ... it to the system by helping the downtrodden is pure heart and allows the story to have a grounded, feel-good pulse. Additionally, the idea of a clandestine clinic in this fantasy world stirs up intrigue about class and authority. Although not earth-shattering, the supporting cast has gregarious and lively banter that keeps things for the most part from going completely flat. The animation shines through during action scenes and the colorful magic effects bring a bit of sparkle to an otherwise gritty aesthetic. The opening track is a dance-pop banger that strikes the right optimistic vibe of the show.

What Tanks It: Overall, the story is a bore. It recycles every "kicked-out hero" trope with no freshness or stakes to speak of. The story feels limp as it lacks anticipation or surprises and the emotional beats feel to happen on autopilot. The lead healer character is a blank slate archetype - gritty but with zero real personality to grab you. The supporting cast (while fun) is a trove of fantasy archetype throwbacks and real depth. The animation stumbles hard during slower paced scenes: the movements feel stiff, the backgrounds appear dull, and the world feels cheap. The score feels forgettable and barely exists aside from the opening track and the sound design is sometimes so weak you do not even feel the tension of typical fights or moments of drama.

Overall, I was ready to cheer for this scrappy healer and his ragtag band - the heart to do so feels to be there - but the generic plot lines, dull lead character, and shaky visuals don't hold deliver. It has Banished from the Hero's Party energy without any of the polish. I can see where the more cozy bits may be appealing for ieakai fans. But setting this aside, this would need a serious kick to make it stand out.

Preliminary (3/12 eps)

The Brilliant Healer's New Life in the Shadows is another of the "kicked out of the hero party" fantasy anime, just from that you should know what type of quality to expect. It's also part of the new craze where the healers get the focus of the story except less...Redo Of Healer.

Zenos is a brilliant healer who opens an underground clinic in the slums after being kicked out of his party for...some reason, you'd think they would want a healer who can do feats like Zenos, but nope. Who needs a healer anyway, right?

Zenos isn't one of those characters who's kind of weak in ... the beginning and immediately get OP the next episode, no. This motherfucker can reconstruct muscles, tissue, and flesh to create new limbs from the very start and overall compared to most fantasy MCs, Zenos is actually competent and isn't constantly nervous around everything that has tits. Which is kinda sad that that kind of character is a step up, that should be the standard in my opinion.

Now let's get to everyone's favorite part; the harem. It's easily my least favorite part about the anime. We have the loli girl that he saved from slave traders who now loves him. a ghost girl who has that annoying ass "huhuhu~" laugh. Then the lizard girl, wolf girl, and orc girl which are all interchangeable to me. None of them are interesting in the slightest, they're just there to make weebs pick and choose their favorite.
One thing I will give the anime credit for is they don't even try to hide it, the 1st episode practically opens up with every girl being introduced right off the bat. Maybe I'm too harsh on harems, it's just not my thing. I'm just so tired of seeing the same types of girls in every goddamn generic fantasy anime. Surely there's more personalities to choose from than the same 5 over and over.

Ignoring the harem part though, I personally think this is one of the better generic fantasy anime, not good by any means, but it's fun. Zenos is a more likable protagonist and I find the actual plot kind of interesting. The animation is also weirdly good for a show like this, the scene where he makes a new arm for the lizard girl is pretty damn smooth. If you want decent fantasy schlock to just turn your brain off too, this one is for you.

As with most Isekai anime nowadays this is just an Harem anime with a fantasy settings clearly displayed on the cover art. As we all know Harems used to be king of anime genres but then gave way to Isekai's in the mid 2010's only to not so subtilty reintroduce itself into Isekai's because its another world why not have all the babes? I understand that most are hyper sensitive to the harem tag but anime's like this are 100% harems and should be tagged as such regardless of baggage from the past. This anime is just a generic Harem Isekai with no true redeeming ... qualities you can pass this and never look back.
