Historical, abstract, done like a painting, and done with sounds of old japanese theater. Although mononoke is much more abstract, the animation style and sounds of Otogizoushi reminded me instantly of mononoke.

In both titles, the style and themes appear rather similar to me. They are drawn with rather dark pictures, with characters that are proportioned realistically (or less or in other ways deformed than the usual figures in the Japanese cartoons). The topics that are dealt with are rebirth, immortality, fateful encounters and the fates of individuals. Oh well, and there is romance... If you want to watch dark lovestories full of karma develop in times centuries apart, these titles may be for you.

Both shows deal with ancient mystical occurrences causing trouble in the present day and the reincarnation of star-crossed lovers.

the story is set in both of the series in the medieval japan. there is the same atmosphere : a sad love. and the same question: will this love be fulfilled when the souls will reincarnate...

Although Bakumatsu has better, clearer drawing in my opinion both these anime are very interesting and revolve around journey's taken to discover the truth. The anime include swords and some magic and fight scenes. It's all very satisfying and exciting so give either a try.
