An Interest Stack whose goal is to analyze the use of 3DCG in various anime, as well as to advocate for how it represents a technological riches for anime as a whole. Shows will include works that I feel can teach us all interesting things.
3DCG, short for three-dimensional computer graphics, is also known in animation as CGI, or computer-generated imagery. Since Japanese animation has throughout the history of the artform been associated with 2D limited animation, there is undeserved prejudice toward shows that primarily or conspicuously make use of 3DCG — something that anime studios themselves are aware of. French animator Benjamin Faure, working at MAPPA, worked on 3D Western animation before making it into the Japanese anime industry, where 3D skills are still helping him.
3DCG requires the use of modern softwares and computers for 3D modeling (done in the preproduction stage of the pipeline), rigging (like the facial rigging popularized by VTubers), 3D animation (which only comes after the rigging), renders (allowing for interesting camerawork or textures), shaders (relative to the lighting, like cel-shading, which reduces the photorealism for more simplicity)...
Because the computer crunches the numbers for animators, 3DCG allows for a more consistent anatomy, and assets only have to be modelized a single time. Going with a 3DCG style thus allows studios to dedicate less resources on key and in-between animations as well as on corrections and coloring, saving costs in the process.
An artistic advantage of going with 3DCG can be to use more ambitious camerawork, to render environments with a consistent architecture, or to even go more crazy with visual effects and shaders.
While consistent anatomy can be perceived to take away from the intentional deformation that anime often uses, thus going off-model for an over-the-top impact, if used with sagacity an animator will be able to make use of the camera and perspective to deform the character. This is seen in Love Live!'s recent dances. The ability to render interesting textures and a consistent anatomy can be a strength for mecha characters or props.
All in all, 3DCG is a part of anime that doesn't get enough recognition, though it has accompanied anime in its history and is an obvious part of its future, especially at a time where the production committees are risk-adverse and used to capping the budget, and with 2D animation losing in momentum.
