The best way to describe Z Mind is that it's a 70s mech show made in the late 90s. Specifically the earlier Sunrise Super robot shows, Including Raideen, Zambot 3,Daitarn 3, and Trider G7. Heck, the show takes place during the 70s since there is a scene of the characters watching Brave Raideen.
The plot isn't original for the genre, but it knows this and is honest about itself.
What it makes up for originality is in personality. The show doesn't take itself too seriously, since there are points in the show where it pokes fun at other mech shows and what not. The characters I

found to be pretty charming and have decent development given the show's run time. The plot does start becoming more clear by the end and it was pretty well handled.
The biggest problem with the OVA is that there was a promise at the end of a sequel. That didn't happen since the OVA didn't do much financially, which is a shame since it looked like it heading in the right direction.
The animation is pretty nice and consistent. The battles are Entertaining with Good choreography and being fast paced. Being a mech show, It's obligatory to bring up the mech and Z mind I think is a really cool looking robot. Much like the show itself, it's a lot like an earlier sunrise super robot with it's Flashy designs, Weaponry, and it's Daioja esc combination.
Music isn't anything amazing, but it's fits the show well. I personally found the Main theme to be pretty darn catchy. Voice acting wise, The Japanese side of things is pretty good. The english dub by Ocean Group is also pretty good. It's pretty campy, so it fits well with the tone of the show
Z mind isn't amazing, but it's a charming and entertaining Mech OVA from the late 90s, even if it won't get a sequel anytime soon. Worth a look if you want a short and sweet robot show.
