For those who watched the original 3-episode OVA series and thought this was simply a compilation movie, we really need to separate things a bit and give context to what happens with this work.
The series was made as a typical robotic-girls sci-fi show about war between different species, in the vein of Bubblegum Crisis, but with a very era specific tone from J.C. Staff light, silly, and carefree humor. However, the third OVA becomes what the animators truly wanted to create with Frontline soportive studio. A pilot work that clearly shows influences from Bubblegum Crisis, Akira, and Gundam, and perhaps even Evangelion given the time
...
when the episode was released.
This movie maintains a more orderly timeline of the original work and provides a stronger narrative, with extra expository scenes and a longer ending that concludes with a cliffhanger, showing development and potential that could have been impressive. It’s no coincidence that its inspiration from Akira and Gundam is evident. Even though the change in art, direction, and tone compared to the original work is noticeable, here they manage through expository ellipses to give it coherence, turning the piece into something much more solid and enjoyable.
If we take the third OVA alone, it is perhaps one of the best episodes ever made in the industry, with superlative levels of animation and direction. If we combine the other two mediocre episodes and weave them together properly, we get this work, which lowers the overall quality but improves it in general. Recommended.
