Anime Tenchou, or Two Minutes of Mirth
There's not a whole lot to say about a two minute commercial for a real life anime and manga store... except when it's animated by Gainax and Hiroyuki Imaishi.
When you combine the future craziness that would be Dead Leaves with Imaishi's immediately recognizable character designs and super wild and hyperactive characters, add in his penchant for flamboyant, hyper exaggerated story work (of which there's a lot packed into a tiny two minute commercial!)
you get ANIME TENCHOU!
For a bit of background, Anime Tenchou is the mascot for the "Animate" store. This commercial was originally designed to be just that- show off the new mascot and bring in some revenue to Animate. Gainax was contacted to make this little short, and a young Imaishi was given lead duties. It's since become nearly memetic, and Anime Tenchou has even crossed over into the popular series Lucky Star, in quite a few short segments.
Now... they've said Jojo was manly. They said Kenshiro was manly. Well, just who the hell do you think Anime Tenchou is?!? He's got some hair to rival anyone from Yugioh, overreactions strong enough to compete with any Spanish language soap opera, and an apron and visor emblazoned in red with his position of immense power and glory as STORE MANAGER, red headband tails flapping in the breeze generated by his majesty. At the mere mention of sales, explosions large enough to level an entire aisle of manga. At the notion of deals, his presence becomes a grandeur of accommodation and helpfulness.
Bestowed with such powers as "Collecting Cash", "Recommending Anime", "Staking Out Customers", and with his infinite charisma, Anime Tenchou commands his motley crew of employees to produce the greatest profit margins Animate has ever seen!
HE. IS. ANIME TENCHOU!
