Fuuun Ishin Dai Shogun starts off with an unoriginal, but still decent premise. While the alternate history with mecha has been done before, the idea can still be made to work. This does not. Dai Shogun has a great start point, main protagonist Keiichiro is the long lost next Tokugawa lord and has to remain a virgin to pilot a robot that can save Japan from the shinsangumi... I think. The story has so many plot points and does such a poor job introducing them that I can barely remember them. It really doesn't help that almost all of the series is spent on hijinks, so you lose track of what little competent story that there is. Several characters enter and exit with little explanation as to their goals and motivations, the characters who stick around seem to change their motivations extremely quickly with no prompting, and I don't think we ever really learn what the main villain's name and motivation are. Instead, most of the time is dedicated to fanservice that isn't very good because the animation sucks. The mecha, Susanowo, isn't used more than five times over the series, and its coolest function, changing form and abilities based on which girl is his copilot in the robot, is only used once for each girl. It's just disappointing. The real shame comes from the voice actors and designers. The mecha look really cool and the characters unique and cool. Heck, lead female Kiriko wears little archeologist glasses in civilian clothes, which I have never seen in any other anime. The voice acting is topnotch, ruined mainly by the fact that the characters have nothing interesting to say. Keiichiro is voiced by Tetsuya Kakihara, the voice of Simon from Guerren Lagaan and Natsu from Fairy Tail, and he does fine as the character. The best character and voice is Yukari Tamura as Chihiro, the fox demon girl who is in crazy love with Keichiro. Tamura makes Chihiro cute, loveable, and fun. Sadly, not even she can save this boring, confusing, and just uninteresting series, if you want historic boobs, go watch something else.
