Noragami and Kyoukai no Rinne takes place in a modern setting but with fantasy/supernatural elements involving the events of their perspective stories. Rinne and Yato are the down-and-out, jersey-wearing, weapon-wielding protagonists of their respective series. They'll take on most any job in the spirit world if it means earning a buck and reaching their goals. Yato to fund his own shrine. Rinne to repay a massive debt saddled onto him by his family.
The female deuteragonists of their respective series, Sakura and Hiyori who are "normal" high school girls, find themselves caught up in the spirit world and aiding the protagonists.
Both series have comedic and serious moments although Rinne leans towards the comedic side and Noragami leans towards the serious and dramatic side.
