Neko no Ongaeshi is the story that the girl is writing in Mimi wo Sumaseba.
This is direcly related since Baron and Muta (Renaldo Moon) are a huge part of the story. Both are good and give insight on each other, both are ghibli/Miyazaki's film, so it's a must watch.

If you watch whisper of the heart before the cat returns this cat character will make more sense and it will give more depth to the movie, the cat returns.

Letting aside the fact that both of this amazing movies are Studio Ghibli's production the storyline of each of them is simply splendid!The animation and soundtrack is beyond comperable and i'm not sure if i can find the right words to describe this amazingness!You ought to watch them!I hope you enjoy!
The Cat Returns features two characters from "Whisper of the Heart"
1.Muta (the cat from "Whisper") &
2.Baron (the cat statue from "Whisper") ;)
