Wow I completely agree with your review of Summer Wars! From the way people go on (and the amount of negative votes I got) I thought maybe I was just about the only person who wasn't impressed with it.

After your three character synopses, I'm more or less convinced you really didn't absorb much of the movie at all. To claim that the main guy didn't grow at all throughout the movie is proof of that. It's extremely obvious that he does grow, not even you can say the he at the start of the movie is just like the he at the end. Your complaint that he should have grown super strong and led the whole family to victory makes me wonder if you even finished watching the movie. He pretty much does exactly that, but in his own way. He's not going to command the family like he's the next Lelouch, characters shouldn't pull complete 180s on their character, especially in a two hour film depicting the events that spread over less than a week. In contrast, Gurren Lagann tells the story of many years over 26 episodes, plenty of time to have a character completely evolve mentally.
Calling the girl a horrible character with no good qualities at all is way too harsh. If you watched the movie you would know why she lied, and see that she's not that bad a character at all. In fact, she's a very sweet girl with genuinely good intentions. As for her relationship with her uncle, even if he was her childhood crush, it had been like ten years or something since she last saw him. People change over such a long span of time. At the movie's close, after the main boy showed such bravery and abilities, it's not that crazy for her to find him at least a little dashing.
The kid with the rabbit avatar was pretty much a support character. This is a good example of why your idea that usefulness determines how good the character is is genuinely wrong. As you clearly saw, this kid was very 'useful' in the movie. However, in no way was he central to the main plot. He was just a tool for fights like you said.
You're free to dislike the plot all you want. I thought it was awesome, but that's just me. However, your great misinterpretations of the two main characters is quite the misstep. Maybe the next time you watch a movie you should try to understand the characters better instead of just insist they're bad the entire time.

I don't get why people say a character has to be 'useful' to be a good character. What the heck does useful even mean? This isn't an MMO, a character's qualities aren't determined by how well they fight. Even in a show like Code Geass, the skills and abilities of a character have little to do with how interesting the character is.
