I enjoy analyzing and critiquing, and I'm using this MAL account as an extension of that into anime and manga.
I see a lot of cases in reviews and critiques where negative factors end up undermining or clouding the achievements of the positives, I'll try to avoid that do my best to be as balanced in my analysis as possible. Does anyone even read this? I guess I'm just typing this out to satisfy myself at this point.
A rough idea of what my anime ratings indicate:
4/10 - A chore. Being sarcastic or watching with friends got me through these. Likely not the intended audience.
5/10 - Average. Most likely just intended to be nothing more than a money grab. Or they screwed up really badly.
6/10 - Pretty awful in delivery, hiccups prevalent throughout.
7/10 - Enjoyable, albeit with with some suspension of disbelief.
8/10 - Entertaining and fun, and close to being super great. Tiny limitations or hiccups.
9/10 - Inspiring, thought-provoking or mechanically fantastic. Very fun to watch.
10/10 -
Real bumpin'.
I've run into a handful of shows that I could classify as genre defining, masterful and straight hot fire, but I think a 10/10 show is something that not only meets those requirements, but goes beyond that and holds a personal meaning to you. So I guess I'm still just searching for that 'perfect' series for me.
If you're looking for recommendations based on my list, I guess I'd recommend anything 8/10 and above.I like to think that anything given 9/10 have come close to mastering at least one face of the medium, be it animation, sound, writing or directing or anything. That being said, most factors used to determine the anime's rating are ultimately filtered through my personal taste (albeit my range of taste covers a lot of ground), so if anything, I'd take these ratings with a little grain of salt.
