Here is some friendly advice from a huge Type Moon fan. FSN is written by Kinoku Nasu who is the head of Type Moon. FSN consist of three whole routes with different stories and characters. The anime was an adaptation of the generic and worst written route. The other two are just as dark as Zero and are more complex as it is more psychological and the plot is more than just a holy grail war. Plus there is plenty of character and fun moments before it gets dark so you perform a connection and like the characters unlike FZ. FSN is not a harem VN and even if it was that doesn't mean it can't be dark . Plus darkness doesn't equal good writing. Gen Urobuchi write FZ and he has no affiliation with type moon. FSN Is an amazing piece of work I highly recommend it and if you want to partake all three routes are on an account called xerblade on YouTube.
Ps: The second route Unlimited Blade Works gets into why Shirou is so heroic and balls to the wall. Believe me it is a devastating reason and it really separates him from the norm in shounen protagonist. Believe me if you like idealistic main characters with complexity you will start to like him.
