Well, you're right, there is some stuff unexplained. But think about it: does it really need any explaining? I mean, perhaps the show was meant to be seen only from Naota's point of view. Remember that the only hint we have that Haruko is part of some organization is when she's communicating with them in Naota's room, then he walks in on her. That's basically the only thing we see of her and her organization. What I'm trying to get at is that maybe we aren't supposed to know, you know? Even though everybody says the manga and anime don't tie in, I think they kinda do. In the manga, you find out Nao's brother is kind of a tool who gets different girls and parties and shit. Also, at the end (spoiler), Haruko gives Naota her vespa and tells him that if he learns how to use it, he can come visit her. I think that kind of explains the ending a little of the anime, like, maybe the answer behind everything lays only in Haruko, and that's what Naota wants... I don't know... The thing I love the most about FLCL is how it's meant to make you think. I love shows that don't blatantly tell you the meaning.
I really don't see how you couldn't follow the characters' motives... Haruko's= Atomisk, Naota's= to be grown up/ become just like Tasuku, Mamimi's= live in the past, ergo messing with ex's little brother... I don't understand what you don't like about it, really. Also, what do you mean there's acid flickering on the screen? I think I know where you're coming from with all of this though. You think that since a plot isn't thrown out there for all to see that there's no story, ergo shitty anime/anything with no plot. I used to be just like that (not to compare ourselves). However, I've come to like anime for things OTHER than plot alone. Even if you think there's no plot, there's well more things to like in FLCL. You don't necessarily have to LOVE it, but you also don't have to go around saying how shitty it is. The characters are awesome (all very zany and immature in their own ways), the art is fantastic (I don't see how you don't like the art... It's amazing), the script... Oh God, the script is freaking 100% amazing, hands down. Yoji Enokido is the best script-writer in the world. He also wrote scripts for Ouran High School Host Club, RahXephon, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Neon Genesis Evangelion (a little in the show, more in the movies... a lot more), and Star Driver. Star Driver is a great example of what I mean by liking something for reasons OTHER than plot. There's no plot whatsoever in Star Driver... If there is, it's shit. It's about a group of people trying to do something... And that "something" has yet to be discussed in the show... However, the characters are lovable (and I mean lovable), the music is amazing (oh, another high point in FLCL... THE MUSIC WAS HEAVENLY!!!), and the script... By George I tell you, the script is freaking... It's simply put: awesome. Yoji outdoes himself again. In short: try not to base anime solely on plot. Look at other aspects. I'm sure you have with FLCL, but look again, There has to be something in there you like.

I wouldn't say it's a plot hole, rather a part left out due to point of view of the main character. Another thing: look at the main character's or the director's point of view. What do they WANT you to see, rather than DON'T want you to see. You can find plot holes in ANY anime, movie, show... etc.
See, you can't judge on something you don't understand... That's like... For instance, me saying advanced psychological studies... I look at it, don't understand it, say it's lame. However, if I get into it, try to understand it, and get background on it, maybe I'll like it. However, if it's not for me it's not for me and I'll not touch it.
Unfunny jokes? I'm sorry, that's your bias opinion. It seems to me there's millions of people who think they're damn-well funny, myself included. If it aint your cup of tea, don't drink it, right? If gag-show, slapstick, random-ass humour isn't your thing, stay away from it (and I'm not saying it in a mean way, I'm saying that as in don't go around saying how shitty something is if you don't understand or like the style. I don't go around saying how shitty modern music is only because I absolutely love classic rock. I can't tell if modern music is good or not, because I don't listen to it. If I hear it, I don't know what the hell it is, so I just don't bother judging it...).

Wow, that's a bias opinion if I've ever heard one (and trust me, I have). I was simply stating that they aren't alike, but apparently you wanted to argue...
First of all, FLCL has a GREAT plot. A boy who lives in the shadow of his older brother is finally able to change all of that when he meets a mysterious girl. Yup, no plot whatsoever. This boys head is the only gateway between Medical Meccanica and the galactic prison which holds a numerous amount of mechas from around the galaxy, as well as the pirate king. Nope, still don't see a plot. This mysterious girl USES Naota's childish and jealous emotions (every time he feels some sort of grief or jelousy, the portal activates) in order to save the pirate king (whom she loves, even though they are enemies) who, as I said, is imprisoned by Medical Meccanica. Ah, yes, I never noticed how lacking of a plot FLCL is...
Anywho, Excel Saga... Wait, Excel Saga has unnecessary humour? I'm sorry, but even YOU called it a gag-show... Last time I checked, a gag-show ONLY contains unnecessary humour. Also, it's VERY funny, hence its overrating. Excel Saga DOES have a plot, but there's no plot development (they have a goal, but they never strive to reach it). Why do you need plot development in a gag-comedy show? It's like Cromartie Highschool... It's just random, and uses its randomness to be funny. If you don't think Excel Saga is funny, why did you watch it then? Especially, why did you recommend it?
We also agree on a second thing: those robots ARE bloody cool robots.
How is Excel Saga like FLCL? -_-; Both are funny (Excel Saga is WAY funnier, since it's a comedy anime), but FLCL has a WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY deeper plot.
