TYSM for the recommendations! I’ve certainly heard of animes like Naruto and One Piece but the sheer lengths of them makes me wary. I’ve never watched such lengthy shows over 100 episodes but well life is all about experiencing new things lol! Tokyo Ghoul is already on my plan to watch list but now I’ll prioritize it since I have countless ptw animes. As for Kaguya sama, I’ve never ever heard of it, but I’ll be sure to put in on my ptw list too! Thanks again <333

I like animes with heavy themes and thought-provoking plots instead of lighthearted rom-coms. Is there an anime which you would recommend me?

No one really suggested it to me—I came across Banana Fish on Youtube anime recommendation compilations and it looked interesting so I watched it. It’s since become my favorite anime with my favorite character and I would definitely recommend it if you can stomach loads of death and violence.

But as for what kind of anime is this, uhhh, that’s not too easy to answer. I’ll do my best. Banana Fish is a dark, crime-noir drama set in 1980s America and explores quite heavy themes at its core (e.g., drugs, rape, redophilia, gangs, PTSD, violence, corruption). Although set in this pragmatic and deplorable world that is filled to the brim with death and sexual violence, it tells a visceral story about life and love centered around two male protagonists—Ash Lynx, a 17 year old gang boss, and Eiji, a journalist’s assistant from Japan—and how they change each other’s lives. Character developments are extremely progressive and insightful. The anime starts off more mystery-styled as Ash investigates a spooky and unknown thing called “Banana Fish”, then the plot gradually complicates and unravels into something bigger. I should mention that there are strong BL undertones between Ash and Eiji (but it never gets physical due to Ash’s past). I hope that doesn’t put you off from watching this anime because that’s only a corner of the anime’s broad scope of topics. There’s also a bunch of literary references in Banana Fish that adds deeper insight if you’re one of those classic literature sophisticates. I’d strongly recommend you read the MAL reviews here if you’re interested, the top ones are all very well-written and I’m almost plagiarizing them lol. anyways I do recommend this anime 100%.

If you end up watching it for interest or boredom’s sake do let me know what you think!

Haha yeah, but in fact I’ve watched most of them before coming on MAL, especially the movies (which I didn't know were technically ‘anime’ lol). For example, I watched Kimi no Na wa in the theater when it was released in 2016 but I wasn’t specifically digging animes at the time, I simply watched it as a hyped new cartoon movie. And most mangas entries here are from Webtoon. In fact, I think the only animes I’ve watched AFTER discovering MAL and registering an account are Death Note, No.6, and Banana Fish.
