As an opera composer, PUCCINI is number one for me. I sang my first Cavaradossi in Tosca for my American debut at the San Francisco Opera in 1992. It’s a role I sing less often now, but for many years it was perhaps my favourite, and Tosca remains one of my favourite operas. Now I’m preparing the role of des Grieux for my first Manon Lescaut- a great joy. The Callas Tosca with Bergonzi was the first recording of an opera I ever heard. That was in 1977, when I was training to be an interpreter and had come to France to study at Grenoble University. For a young Soviet student it was not so easy to hear Maria Callas recordings. I still remember my feelings when I heard her first words: ‘Mario! Mario! Mario!’
