A few quick notes about my ratings:
1.) Why my ratings tend to be higher than the general consensus:
Some of you might notice that I tend to rate shows a little bit higher than what is usually the popular consensus and this is for a couple of reasons. Firstly is that my ratings are not based so much on the quality of the series' characters, story and voice acting as it is my own personal enjoyment( though being well-written and expertly produced does go a long way in my mind) and being a person who is increasingly finding himself incredibly easy to entertain this tends to bump up my scores a little bit. As a matter of principle I also try to base my ratings on my first run-though of the show, causing my scores on the big three and Pokemon to be fueled for the most part by nostalgia (the reason I gave the 2nd and 5th Pokemon movies such high scores is because 1.) Lugia is my freaking favorite legendary Pokemon and 2.) Altoshipping is the only Pokemon shipping pair I support, as Latias is the only one of the girls to actually kiss Ash and show outward signs of affection towards him).
2.) My personal rating system:
I'm not really a fan of MAL's rating system, where an okay anime is given a 5 rating and there really isn't much distinguishing a 6 from an 8. I personally prefer to rate anime just like one would be graded in school, where a 7 would be an average show ( 70%, a "C" grade), an above average or pretty good show an 8 ("B" grade), a really well-done show a 9 ("A-") and a truly fantastic show would be awarded a 10 ("A+"). MAL also stipulates that a "10" show would have to be considered a masterpiece, something that only really comes around every couple of years, and in this I also tend to disagree. To me, a "10" show doesn't necessarily have to be the greatest show of the decade but rather one that would probably make my personal top 5 of the anime that I watched that particular year.
3.) Why so many 8 and 9's?
Those looking at my list will also probably notice that I give a lot of the shows that I watch "8" or "9" ratings. This isn't because I'm afraid to grill a horrible anime series but rather the fact that I almost always research a particular show before watching it and if the summary doesn't interest me or the reviews for it are particularly bad I won't even give it a test run. Thus for the most part I pre-screen out the shows that I would have otherwise given low ratings and instead focus on the ones that I will probably like (and usually do as you can see from my ratings). So far this system has worked very well and the only shows I have dropped so far were among the few that I had gone into completely blind.
3.) Why my ratings keep changing:
Unlike a lot of people who only rate an anime after they've viewed the whole thing or when it's finished its run I am constantly updating my rating of my show as I watch it. I usually make my initial rating after the first or second episode, the second time around the halfway or 60% mark and the third and final time after the show has been completed.
