I miss hand painted cel animation!!!! T_T
I've been watching anime and reading manga since I was very young so my knowledge of it is quite extensive. It is going to take a very long time for me to finish adding series I have watched to my list but I am working on it slowly. (also, yes, I know there is some hentai on there, I will watch anything ^^)
I quit watching anime for quite a few years which is why I've seen a ton of 90's anime but missing a lot of early 00' to recent stuff. I don't keep track of things much anymore.
Some of my all time favorite anime include:
Urusei Yatsura 2 Beautiful Dreamer うる星やつら2 ビューティフルドリーマー(Movie)
Shoujo Kakumei Utena Adolescence Mokushiroku 少女 革命 ウテナ~アドゥレセンス黙示録 (Movie)
Monster (TV)
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor 無責任艦長タイラー (TV/OVA)
Mimi o Sumaseba 耳をすませば (movie)
El Hazard 神秘の世界エルハザード (any of them, but the first TV series isn't that great...)
Kiddy Grade (TV) (no, I'm not kidding)
ひぐらしのなく頃に (higurashi no naku koro ni) and ひぐらしのなく頃に解 (kai)
Oh well, thats all I can think of for now. You can see my website with my art and crap on it at http://www.yaisha.com

Kyoto Animation (who did Clannad, Air, Lucky Star, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and the second two Full Metal Panic shows) did a recent new anime adaptation of Kanon that was mostly superior--there were a few minor points I liked better in the Toei version, but the handling of the characters was much better in Kyoto's version and Yuuichi is voiced by the same actor as Kyon in Haruhi, giving the role much more sarcasm (which is how the character is in the original visual novel) and wit. It might be worthwhile to check out, although plot-wise there's not a huge difference from the older one.
Ah, I didn't know that about St. October's origins, though the presentation sure feels very true to the old Sailor Moon kind of format. Very nostalgic! :) Yeah, I had a bad feeling about Shugo, though I was hoping a good director might still salvage it. I REALLY liked some of the concepts behind the original first Pretty Cure's set-up but the execution was awful from episode 1.
Yeah, I really hope Ikuhara comes back to directing shows again, he is very missed.
I just watched up through 8 of Shana (will update my list later, need to run), and agree, though I still feel like it's missing the energy of the original series. Still, I like Margery and Marco a lot, so episode 9 will be interesting. ^_^;

Oh, saw your blog post, I do agree about the state of contemporary mahou shoujo team shows ...although I'd say Sailor Moon always was in a class of it's own for the most part. I did think the first couple of episodes I saw of St. October had that old Sailor Moon R/Ikuhara vibe, though since no one subbed it past that, I've not gotten to watching the raws to see if it kept it up or not. Those first episodes are fun to partly relive the kind of experience I remember seeing new Sailor Moon episodes was like. Not perfect, but better than most I've seen in that regard. I'd hoped that Shugo Chara or the original Pretty Cure would have done the same, but each seems lacking some vital element and just don't seem to have the "sincerity" (for lack of a better term) behind them that I felt Sailor Moon (or even Card Captor Sakura) had, and just seem cheap by comparison.

Kanon's definitely the fluffiest of the Key works I've seen to completion...still I'm a sucker for Yuuichi's sarcasm and I enjoyed the kind of "Sixth Sense"-like mystery behind some of the characters. Did you mean you didn't like the 13-ep Toei Kanon series? The extended Kyo-Ani remake? Both?
I'd say give Air a shot. The story starts with three girls, but that arc goes by really quickly and two of the characters are really more or less side-stories that give clues toward the central plot. When the first arc ends, it then begins the "Summer" arc, which is set 1000 years earlier, in Heian Japan, for reasons that will become clear. After it completes the "Summer" arc, it then moves on to the "Sora" arc, which I won't spoil, but is where it starts getting downright Kafka... Overall, I'd put certain characters' plights in the story into a similar category as Furude Rika in Higurashi... so yeah, I reccomend it. Also this was the first show that made me sit up and take notice of Kyoto Animation's production values. :)

Yeah I got a lot of my LD stuff secondhand for cheap from other otaku wanting to thin out their collections, still have a number that are unopened. In many cases, the LDs are much better video quality than the later cheapie DVD releases (I'm glad I bought all the Japanese Yuna LDs, for example, ADV's transfer is AWFUL). No region coding, either! ^_^;
Yeah, I was kind of like a odd-jobs person with Sierra back then. It was a fun job. Any Sailor Moon references in the two games are wholly my own fault... ;) I'm also in (cartoon form) a couple of Larry scenes with the rest of the staff, lol, including the nude pool @_@.
Didja see the Adult Swim toys I worked on?

The avatars clothes look like they are 2 sizes to big for her.
Your manga adaption of it is a hell of alot better. Theres also nothing wrong with having a virtual pet, less mess and dont have to let them outside.

Yeah Gotoh only directed the OVA sequel, Gatekeepers 21. The original series is directed by Junichi Satou (Sailor Moon series 1, Princess Tutu, Kaleidostar, Magic Users' Club, etc.)
