Indeed it was more of a unrequited love in the film.
Although both were suffering from the past but akari was able to move on with her life but takaki couldn't,he was suffering each day.
He broke up with his gf,left the job and he didn't even know what he was searching for until the last scene when he saw glimpse of akari he understand that she's no longer waiting for him so he smiled and decided to moved on as well or maybe not.(it's upto us to decide )
Shinkai tried to make the plot as realistic as possible although we can complain that the mc was a coward,it was his mistake that the relation didn't worked but believe me what done is done,things could've different but it didn't turned out like that.
The film wasn't mean to end on a happy conclusive note and it probably won't appeal to many viewers but considering the music track,animation,interpretation it's nothing short of a masterpiece.(individual opinion)
