The first anime I watched knowing it was anime was Sailor Moon. I tend to like stories that contain mythologies, especially those that reference religion or astrology or mythology. I love when movies don't give final answers and explanations, but leave it to the viewer to decide. Some of my favorites are science fiction with cyber punk/cyborg/mecha aspects.

Glad you liked it, it's a paragon of responsible storytelling, every single storyline is wrapped up. Sure, it's complex and sometimes confusing (as the genre is), but everything makes sense when you think about it. The very last scene, where the show comes full circle, is probably the most satisfying ending any anime I've seen has had, it fills me with such a sense of serenity and happiness. Won't spoil anything, that would be a mortal sin ;)

If you liked Neon Genesis Evangelion and the whole "cerebral mecha sub-genre" you should consider giving RahXephon a try. It's like the mature and competent, yet less successful younger brother of NGE ;)
