I'm an 18 year old heavy gamer who enjoys anime as well, especially in-between frustrating or boring bouts of gaming. I enjoy them both equally.
My taste in anime is all over the place. I love anime that make me think, be it the "mystery" kind of thinking, the "thriller" kind of thinking, even romantic kind of thinking -- anime that make me think are wonderful.
I love mindblowing endings, endings that leave me speechless, either shaken to my core or throttled beyond words.
I love anime that aren't afraid to be serious. It seems that a lot of anime are fretful to treat their viewers as anything but kids, and if I had a dime for everytime that ruined plot, I'd be a millionaire.
All of this shows when you look at my favorite anime!
My favorite character from any anime ever is Mikami Teru from Death Note, and you can imagine how sad I was that he received the smallest screentime of any major character. As one of my favorite anime, Death Note provides a lot of moral grays that I can constantly argue with not only other people about, but also with myself. However, I can say that I agree with Light's ideals entirely, and I can also say that I don't think he ever did anything evil -- even if he is presented malevolently art-wise, I think it's worth reminding people that the CONTENT is what's important, not how it's presented.
Onto Mikami, the way he worships Light so honestly and would do anything for him --
including killing himself
-- their likeness in their way of thinking, and even Mikami's childhood; I sympathize with him more than I've ever sympathized with another character in anything, be it book, movie, anime, whatever.
How excited he was when he sees Light as he's peeking through the door, his pleasure when he had finally completed his mission, his absolute horror when he fails and is watching Light crawling weakly in a puddle of his own blood, his decision to kill himself after realizing he had failed his God -- I absolutely felt like I was in Mikami's shoes the whole way through, and it took me a long, long time to cope with this ending.
And that's just my #1! I have a limit of 10 favorite characters on MAL, and each of them I could write an essay about -- but I won't for your sake and mine!
All of my top 5 anime are must-watches, if you haven't seen them. They all are universally likeable even if you hate anime, but I will warn you that if you cannot cope with violence, extremely disputable moral grays, or thinking -- none of them are for you!
