I agree that although Rent-a-Girlfriend isn't quite living up to the hopes I had for it from the first episode, it's still a nice anime.

I'm glad you're enjoying it and at your own pace. Let me know what you think of 3-gatsu when you get around to finishing it.

I do chemistry research, though in the long run I'm more interested in teaching than in research.

I could never copy my friend, since I don't have the right personality or presence to pull off a lot of the tricks that he could pull off with ease. I'm far too transparent in my intentions.

It is possible that the anime will go down the run-of-the-mill romantic comedy lane, spiced with extra awkwardness, but I'm still hopeful. I'm still simply pleased to watch something with an MC that doesn't feel stamped out by a cookie cutter, despite the fact that he is very awkward and likely not someone I would want as a friend in real life.

3-gatsu no Lion really is a cut above when it comes to developing side characters. Everyone gets their moment to stand in the limelight sooner or later. Rei's outburst episode really is incredible; the scene of him slowly breaking into a run is just so perfect.

I didn't know you were an engineer. What kind of engineering do you do? I have a lot of engineers in my family, but I chose the pure science route myself.

Takagi-san really is a gem, a gold standard for romantic comedies that want to emphasize the comedy aspect. I had a friend who reminded me of Takagi; no matter how hard I tried, I could never pull anything over him, and when he wanted to prank me, he succeeded.

I liked the latest episode, since it fleshed out the main character a little more. I'm a very pacing-resilient person though when the pace is slow (super-fast pacing throws me off more than slow pacing.)

Part of why I really like 3-gatsu no Lion is because it has the slice of life viewpoint but allows its characters to actually have a full life instead of just focusing on a specific aspect of their lives. This really increases the ability to develop the characters, in my opinion.

I've read one trilogy by Robin Hobb, the one about Fitz. I think I only ever read one or two books by Feist. I've read the Lord of the Rings, but I really need to read them again at some point.

That's kind of funny. My actual favorite place to read is in a big fluffy armchair, but I don't have one of those, so I settle for other chairs and couches.

I feel that he does want to please his family, but he was willing to admit his error to his Grandma. It is when his friends show up and he is with Chizuru that he always starts lying up a storm. I agree that the pace is refreshing, cutting to the meat of the romance without wandering in a "she loves me, she loves me not" daze. I haven't started reading the manga; we'll see if I like the story enough to want to read it by the end.

It has been a while since I watched the show, but since I could remember that the MC had real life goals (wanting to be an author) and actually pursued them I considered him well-developed, at least by comparison to other protagonists. I think my favorites Minimi songs are Kawaki wo Ameku and Hollowness (not sure about the Japanese title...)

What are your favorite fantasy novels? I also love fantasy; my personal favorite author is Brandon Sanderson.

My parent's place is the same way, filled with books (my mom loves them best, but my dad will also read on occasion.) When I went to look at the place I'm currently renting, the landlord mentioned I could choose one of two rooms. I immediately knew that I wanted the room that had a giant bookshelf in it! It's funny that you say nothing is better than lying on bed reading a book, since I almost always sit to read.

I like your analysis of the MC as Grandma's child; I hadn't thought of that but it makes much more sense of his actions. He is definitely is better able to assert what he wants than Rikuo, but he is pretty spineless when it comes to dealing with peer pressure. I personally thought the second episode's humor wasn't quite as good as the first, but the third episode was very funny again. I mostly hear Aqua bleeding through when Chizuru is yelling at Kazuya.

Domestic Girlfriend is a dumpster fire, but it's a dumpster fire that has good, believable characters. I really like that the MC feels like a real human being instead of a blank slate for the viewer to impose themselves upon. Minami is one of my favorite musicians! Have you heard her new song called "Waiting for Rain?"

I think part of why I liked the first episode of Koi to Producer so much was that I watched it after the abysmal first episode of Gibiate. I'm still watching it, but no longer have especially high hopes for it.

Don't feel bad for dropping Re:Zero! Watching anime isn't supposed to feel like eating your vegetables (I'd insert a real vegetable here, but I actually like vegetables...oh well.)

I'm a physical copy person, one of those people that just really loves the feel of a book in their hands. I generally don't read anything on a screen bigger than an article unless I can't get it any other way. I either buy them (mostly if it is a series I know I really like) or borrow them through Interlibrary loan, since my local library doesn't have any as far as I know. Light novels are at least easy to find in bookstores in my area, plus you can buy just about anything from Amazon.

I didn't like the second episode quite as much as the first, but it was still a good episode. Hopefully we'll get a more developed MC as time goes on (that was one thing Yesterday wo Uttate did really well.) Mami is relationship arsenic; hopefully our MC figures out he's poisoned before it is too late. I'm also loving the sound of Aqua's VA behind Chizuru's character. The grandma definitely is a unique flavor. My maternal grandmother would be utterly appalled by her; my paternal grandma might not be capable of being appalled (she's a very kind, accepting soul) but I don't think they'd be friends either.

Another show I found that might be good is Koi to Producer. It looks like a reverse harem, which isn't my general cup of tea, but it seems like it will have an interesting plot beyond the harem. You should give the first episode a shot.

Having read the light novels, I don't think you need to be that worried about those villains being defeated this season. Still, we all have our own unique tastes, so it's all good if I love it and you don't!!!

That first episode really was great. A lot of people seemed to dislike the protagonist, but I thought he seemed like a decent guy going through a rough time. The humor was on point, plus the two main characters did have chemistry, even if they don't realize that yet. Grandma definitely forgot to ride the moral judgement train as far as most older people do.

I've never seen the first anime version of Fruits Basket, so I don't have any personal opinion about which one is best to start with. What I have heard is that the author of Fruits Basket ended up significantly disliking the first version, I think in part because they caught up to the manga and then just ventured off into anime only land. That being said, I don't know what the author's reaction to the new series is, so the former point may be moot.

I personally really enjoy the remake. It interested me enough that I ended up reading the manga, which is pretty rare (I'm more of a light novel person than a manga person.) Having read the manga, I think that the remake is doing a great job of adapting the series faithfully. It's not standout in animation only terms, but it really allows the excellence of the source material to shine through. Since the source is a masterpiece, the anime is a masterpiece in my opinion as a consequence.

Disappear all you need to! The real world's siren call shouldn't be ignored.

I suppose I just liked the plot twists of Re:Zero more than most. The world wasn't the most clever, but at least it was far less bland than RPG-in-a-shell worlds.

The mouth design in 3-gatsu no Lion is intentional. If you pay attention to when their mouths start to look more lion-like (black edge to the lips and sharper canines,) that's when you know that important character moments are on the way! The beginning to 3-gatsu no Lion is a little dry, but it is setting up for a big payoff about halfway through the first season.

I actually have seen the first season of Haruhi. I'm at the point of watching the endless eight episodes, which I've been putting off until I know I'm in the mood to go through five very similar episodes all at once.

Coronavirus continues to poison the well of anime, but at least we have several quality shows to watch this season. I honestly wasn't expecting the first episode of Kanajo to be so good. As long as it doesn't devolve into beaten-to-death harem tropes, I could see myself giving it a 9 or 10. The other romance/drama I'm still watching is the Fruits Basket remake, which has had some great episodes these past few weeks.

I'm a little torn between Shinako and Haru, probably as a result of the presentation. If in real life you asked me to choose between a high school science teacher and an high school dropout, no other info included, I'd choose Shinako every time. Shinako's calmer personality is also more my style, but her indecisive nature would grate on me. Her comments that denigrated Rikuo also really bothered me (even if the criticism was accurate, it wasn't couched kindly, which I think is essential, especially in a relationship.) Overall, the extra development of Shinako tended to bother me more than build her up, so I'd probably fall on the Haru side.

What particularly about the story telling bothered you with Re:zero? I happened to like the story personally (I probably wouldn't score anything a 10 if I disliked the story.)

As for Romance +SoL anime, if you haven't watched After the Rain (Koi wa Ameagari wo You ni) you should give it a shot (I assume you haven't since it isn't on your list.) The premise is a little disconcerting but the way it deals with the premise is mature, so it doesn't end up being offensive.

I guess I must one up sacrilege with blasphemy, as I actually haven't even finished Hibike S1 yet...I've been putting it off for too long. I started watching it right after the KyoAni tragedy last year along with other KyoAni works, and I either overdosed myself on KyoAni or got distracted and never finished it. I guess this is my wake up call to do so (along with season 2.)

I chose French, though my only choices were French or Spanish. For a non-rebellious child, I had a stubborn streak and decided to pick the language that my parents didn't speak. I didn't dislike learning French, but I liked just about every other subject more (plus I've never been the best at practicing...)

I thought that the last episode of Yesterday wo Uttate was VERY rushed. As a result, it shot the feeling of the series in the foot. If the series had actually been 18 episodes, I think it could have easily been a masterpiece, but it was merely good instead. Maybe it's a little unfair of me to be so influenced by the ending, but endings matter to me a lot.

I do love Romance/SoL. I also love most things with a fantasy touch, which is part of why I love Re:Zero (I also like the characters, especially the fact that characters like Subaru are allowed to be something less than angelic.) Also, it's great that you don't share my every opinion, since if you did our conversations would be deathly boring.

As for 3-gatsu no Lion, definitely make time for it. It's been my favorite anime since I saw it. It's the type of slice of life that transcends the genre by including the character progression that is often lacking a bit in the average SoL anime (really, it's a SoL/drama mix.) No major romance, but plenty of budding potential. It also has some of the best animation I've seen, animation that isn't just beautiful but makes use of the medium to tell a better story than you could without animation.

Started watching anime around 2013 and binged a lot of it for the next two years. My tastes in anime settled by then and I've became incredibly picky along the years.

The volume of anime that I watch has waned across the years because finding something that I like is few and far in between and I don't have much vigor left in me to watch a lot of episodes back to back.

I primarily like anime that makes me ponder and think. I like anime that is grounded too, especially in story-telling. Those are pretty rare so I can only watch like two or three anime per year nowadays.

I took French for three years when I was in middle school / high school, but looking at your comment board just reminds me how little I managed to actually learn. Overall, I'm incredibly lucky to have my first language be English given my lack of desire to spend cognitive resources and time on learning another language (though I'd probably attempt Japanese if it weren't for the double whammy of inverted sentence structure and kanji.)
