There is beauty in this manga. The dark kind. But Deadman Wonderland loses control, even purpose of its shadows and by the end the big picture is Pollock's murkiest squid ink.
Yeah, a big prison dedicated to bloody demonstrations of survival sounds amazing. You can make it intrincate, emotional or at least critical. None of this happens; characters are one note, their relationships and backgrounds revolve around specks of nihilist violence or the importance of family blood, the only emotion is survivalist rage and the critique fades away for a classical battle for revenge type. The Wonderland doesn't even appear again til the very last

Season one was promising. Sure, Xin was a dumb kid that survived just by brute force, assassin girl was just aloof and overpowered because edgy magic, the mountain tribe were just the most powerful guys in the country but nobody knew them etc, but factions like the other king of Qin or Zhao were fleshed out and the Big Battle was great. So many tactics, charismatic leaders and thrilling outsmartings. They actually lived and died for their strategies.
This second season, and the third, just leans gradually more and more to the worst parts of this show. See, this is supposed to be about strategy and ... |
