My rating system. Does not 100% correspond to enjoyment, but it basically does.
2- Garbage, pure and simple. If there was a redeeming quality I missed it. Note that shows with average levels of art and music can land here simply by lacking all other basic qualities to be considered entertainment.
3- Still garbage, just without as much abject hatred. A 3 is basically the territory that is lacking in all entertainment value, but also not memorably terrible. In other words, completely unmemorable. Maybe that qualifies it as a 1...
4- It rode the train of mediocrity and almost made it to a 5, but hit its head somewhere on the trip. More often than not the protagonist is to blame for this rating. That or a subpar ending, which is one of my pet peeves.
5- It rode the train of mediocrity right to the last stop. Entertaining simply because it was engineered to be entertaining. Completely safe in all areas. Alternatively, it took huge risks that only sometimes paid off.
6- Now we are in the territory of enjoyment. This is an average show with some special quality or overall strong fundamentals that are worth mentioning in a review. Probably still missed a few key notes.
7- Probably my go-to region for being pleasantly surprised by a show. Strong fundamentals and an air of standing out from the crowd.
8- The best a genre has to offer in terms of quality and enjoyment. If a show can do what it sets out to do nearly perfectly, it will land here. Only thing separating it from 9-10 is the kind of reach it has.
9- Transcend the work itself in complex and fascinating ways. Provide the sort of entertainment that comes along once in a blue moon and can be thought about and watched for years.
1 and 10 are obvious. Barely anything lands in them, and when something does it is the accomplishment of a lifetime, which I will modeling my criticisms and analyses around as I think and talk about it for years and years to come. For better or for worse.
Soon I'll post some reviews I've been writing, but for now I'm not too happy with my output level nor the style I am developing. One day...
