hmm.. I suggest you to watch positions from my list rated as 10 :) For example: Basilisk: Kouga Ninpou Chou, Black Lagoon, Kenichi, Code Geass or X (TV). There is much more but you have to see it yourself and read some reviews ;).

Black Lagoon is the best anime that aired recently i think. Hellsing Ultimate is the shit too. It's so much better than the old TV show! Higurashi could be worth a try for you i think. Same goes for Elfen Lied. Just finished Devil May Cry... It's not thaaat good. But still nice.
You seem to prefer story over action, right?^^
Ha, and you seem to think that Death Note is overrated,too! Good!

haha yeah I know what you mean I just started watching anime again a couple of months ago, since then I think my list of anime more than doubled lol Anyways the must sees from the past couple of seasons would probably be:
Death Note
Code Geass
Darker Than Black
Kenichi
D.Gray-man
and Lovely Complex if you like romance/comedys
