both manga revolve around water, have some mystery/fantasy and are short reads

Both are thrillers/mysteries where mysterious creatures from the sea have managed to turn a small town into a circus. Are they aliens? Mermaids? Monsters? Only a very, very small section of people know what's really happening, and both manga will keep you at the edge of your seat till the end.

A tiny island's community is forced to grapple with modernization, in the midst of which some spooky paranormal stuff happens.

Both stories involve mermaid/merman. Both have similar atmosphere somewhat.

They both have conflicts between the modern world and magic, mysteries involving fantastic sea creatures, and similar realistic-yet-dreamlike artwork. Children of the Sea is the better of the two, but Tropic of the Sea is shorter.

In both mangas the main characters make contact with mermaids. They both talk about not forgetting a promise made, too.

they both deal with people encountering something not from this world. you may tell that it's not a big deal, cause every second manga follow this usual pattern. but this time characters in both mangas encounter something quite similar, it's most likely would be labelled as forces of nature, which are painted in human like manner. it's also a matter of believing and willing to accept something extraordinary.
