In both mangas, a girl falls for a male whom she knew from her childhood. The female decides to follow that love interest and make him fall for her. She gets a makeover after getting embarrassed by him (in Tokyo Kareshi it happened after she followed him and in Bijin Kakumei it happened during her childhood). However, all does not go as planned, and she falls for someone else. Both males pursue the female, but she decides whom to pick. In Bijin Kakumei, she falls for her other childhood friend, and in Tokyo Kareshi, she falls for the person that helps her with her makeover.

In both mangas, a girl comes from the countryside in order to meet up with the person she likes, however, he has changed significantly. In both endings, she does not end up with him. However, in Ren Ai Cupid, only the first chapter involves this scenario, whereas in Tokyo Kareshi, it happens within a 4 chapter story.

Ojousama no Himitsu like Toyko Kareshi have cute similar-looking countryside protagonists that deal with 'everyday' high school happenings: boys and Japanese country accents.
