I know this is a gravedig, but I cannot agree more with the title of this thread.
Confused as to whether I hate it or love it.
From a film point of view, it was done beautifully. From a spectator point of view, it is quite heartbreaking...

That ending T_T. Would've been a top 5 anime if it was more fulfilling, and if they didn't have that song at the end that completely ruined the emotional build-up :/.

"Never have I hated an ending so much, and yet loved it at the same time"

I finally found the best sentence to express my thought about this movie. Thank you!

Yeah, I had mixed feelings of it too, but looking back, it's an ending that I adore.
Of course we want to see Takaki get back together with Akari - that's how ALL typical love stories work. It's the kind of ending everyone wants to see.

However, life doesn't always work out the way we want it to, and that ending portrays that beautifully. You can't always get what you want, so just smile and walk away.

I was indifferent regarding the whole thing.

I've been reading the manga and it's much better so far.

He actually moved on before the railroad scene. he got his life back together by that time. if you pay attention to the dates, when he was miserable was month prior to that scene. So he already has moved and if akari was actually there, he smiles and walks away cherishing the memories. and besides if this was realistic, he will probably meet up with her again sometime in the future just to catch up considering she is in tokyo as well. And according to the manga *Spoiler*>>>>>>>>
cliffhanger assumes that he meets up with kanae again

I guess I died a thousand time while watching this....
that was too much in the end

I thought I loved drama but with the end of this show I'm not sure anymore

Goddamnit this was the most depressing shit but in the same time one of the most beautiful anime I ever watched...if it just could have ended different...why...
I don't even know anymore what I should do now ;(
Even with the manga ending it leaves me pretty much wrecked...half dead

Ps. If you want a story that goes a similar way but deals with a better end just read the manga sekai no hate...

EDIT - the day after watching:
after giving it a lot of serious thought I could find my peace with this story:
if you wanna know how and what thoughts pls read here, maybe you can get to like the ending a bit more, too

Agreed. Reality is sad but beautiful.

I started this and finished the first episode and was like "wow this anime is amazing, I'm going to love it." The last epsiode of the movie I was literally going WTFFFFFF the whole time. The ending was horrible. I mean the creators could've easily made a great ending to the amazing anime. But no, they had to go f*ck it up and screw everyone over with a "realistic ending." The second I saw that cheap ass f*cking ring on her b*tch ass finger I knew I was being screwed over.

THIS is what i feel about this movie

i just watched it earlier, i pick it for refreshing only without having any expectations about the film. but what I get is like "reality slaps" lol

i actually really hated the ending and even confused what the purpose of this film is, as shown are the stories that are quite bitter experienced by the characters, then when the time skips in the hope that something good will happen, it gets even worse followed by a bad ending (like no ships were sailed, depressed character, etc). but on the other hand, the message that this movie gives really hits me. stories that bring about the bitterness of reality in real life, and that's why i can relate, "we have to move on, life must go on"

i just felt like being given a bitter life story and then given a message at the end

You are not actually hating, but u don't want to accept it instead. This isn't just a fiction, it's reality. This is how Distance, cruel fate,one-sided love, works.

It's painful, yet beautiful in another way.
