I would like to watch this movie, due to its rating. However, I would like to know whether I will understand it or not because I have not seen the 1st movie nor the series. Thanks.

Awful idea. Seriously, don't think about it. I doubt you'll give it a high rating if you haven't seen the series, yet alone the two movies. You can understand the 2 movies if you pay attention(it's nothing complex up until now, you only have to remember the characters) but they're not like the series.
So yes, basically. I strongly recommand that you watch Eva in order of release(TV->End of Evangelion->Rebuild/the movies/)
No point in watching only the second movie, you won't get anything about it.

I think you would have a fairly basic understanding of what's going on by watching only the two recently released films (1.0 & 2.0). However, iif you want full comprehension, as waterflame stated, it'd be best to watch the original series and movies.

However, with 3.0 and 4.0 still absent, and the fact that these films are starting to shift from the original plot, it's tough to say.

Of course, "full comprehension" of Evangelion isn't exactly a commonly used phrase.
