I've just finished watching the English dub and, while it pretty well made, I can't help but wonder why they tried changing Ayumi to a guy.
Throughout, all the remaining characters refer to her as 'he' or 'him'. Also, she's been voiced by a male VA...

Okay... I realised a little while after I'd watched the film; Ayumi's a guy. The MAL page refers to him as 'she', but that's the mistake, not the English dub. He's a he. :)

that is probably why s/he is called a "Loup Garou."
In French it means werewolf. I would conclude that in fact Ayumi can change genders.

That's assuming the post you're quoting was based on direct knowledge of Japanese. WeirdFelicia may have read a translation that also just picked one wrong.

It's not impossible to be genderless/sexless in a novel with the Japanese language, Kino no Tabi proved that until it decided to reveal her gender.

well,I ve compare to few sources:

japanese (novel character settings)
http://kyogoku.reichsarchiv.jp/?%E7%A5%9E%E5%9F%9C%E6%AD%A9%E6%9C%AA

chinese
http://baike.baidu.com/view/4355162.htm

http://www.gamez.com.tw/thread-512433-1-1.html

and some other trivial source and found out all of them refering ayumi as "she",although she refer herself as "boku"..

and for me,I think boys won't wear high thigh socks and dress in Japan, unless he want to conceal his sex..
other thing is,there was a man who can't resist to attack girls attacked her at the past. After he rip off her shirt,he regret and start to apologize to her.Well,at that time,at least he believe Ayumi is a girl since he apologizing to her[(=^=) although this seems like not a concrete assumption but I do think that he saw her breast or what that let him feel guilty to attack a girl..]

urm, overall, the gender of Ayumi indeed unclear in the movie but as for the novel, ayumi is refer as a girl.

Actually I have been reading more of the book lately and I'm pretty certain Ayumi is a girl. Apart from all the references of her being a girl there are various comments about her "short hair". I believe that no one would bother mentioning that she has short hair if she had been a boy since that would be considered normal hair for a boy... I also don't think she is supposed to be a boy in the movie. I took a close look to her character design and her body is definitely that of a girl her hips are too wide for her to be a boy. Finally this is from the official site:

In Ayumi's flash back that described the assult on her, she was wearing a skirt and her opened blouse revealed breasts.

I kind of thought the legwear was kind of weird...but regarding voices it's pretty common for females to voice boys...though they did mention that one killer in the flashback killing girls...It's so odd that they didn't bring it up in the movie though people love traps but maybe they wanted to keep it a mystery...very interesting...
