All you'd be missing by not playing Half-Life 1 is what the hell happened at Black Mesa to begin with. HL2 and the episodes follow a completely different story otherwise.

We prefer the term "headcrab zombies". Because in Half-Life, you need a headcrab feeding off your brain to become a zombie. You'll find out more about headcrabs as you play it.
