Hi all. I'm looking for horror anime that are really terrifying. I loved 'Another', but I couldn't get into 'Higurashi' (due to shitty animation). If you are one of the those people who say that "anime cannot be scary because its medium is not suited for the horror genre", you can GTFO of here. Thanks. |

Blood-C Then. That sh*t was intense and i guess quite scary. |

It's hard for animated shows to scare. There are plenty of good horror, but for a horror to be terrifying? That's a big step. Either way, Blood-C is a great show nevertheless. Watch the movie, it's the true ending. |

The only horror I can think of is Jigoku no Shoujo, but I hardly watch horror anime. Ever since I've watched It movie, I've been wondering if anime can do that level of scariness. Damn clowns. |

Not a genuine scary anime but try Corpse Party. |

The first season of Yamishibai might do it for you and maybe the 5th season as well. They're episodic horror short stories (4 minutes each) that are more akin to old ghost stories and can be quite scary. The other seasons though are less good, with season 4 being basically unwatchable and season 6 not far ahead of it |

i'd say the closest to scary an anime has ever gotten for me is alien 9, haven't gone too much into the horror genre so i can't really say |

Shiki or Jigoku Shoujo might be there, but I didn't find either scary. They both do create fine unsettling atmosphere though. I remember finding Gakkou no Kaidan kinda scary, but it's been a long time since I saw it. I'm not sure if it would be scary now that I'm older. It's a solid show though, even if old. Corpse Party is a good horror, but not really as scary as it is brutal. Another is probably best psychological horror anime ever. Unfortunately there is very limited amount of offerings in this genre. Movies are far better at that. |

Anime and manga lends itself greatly to horror tropes - torture, death, inhuman monsters, but I can't remember the last one that scared me, it might be hard to find a genuine scary anime since it's better at giving it's settings atmosphere rather than scares, plus it's animated, may be there's nothing in the brain that triggers that a cartoon can make you think that something frightening is believable |

I actually saw that one in my native language dub on TV. One of the first shows that I have seen. I'm not sure whether it was more faithful to original or abridged like English dub. I should re-watch it someday in Japanese to see how it is, and maybe in English too. |

Shin Sekai Yori and Perfect Blue are the rare anime that have given me that chills-up-my-spine dread that only good, subtle horror can provide. |
This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi! I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom: "Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news. Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people. Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation. There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime. You should be watching Carole & Tuesday." |

'Terrifying' would be a huge overstatement, at least for me, but I would say Shin Sekai Yori, Narutaru, Shiki and Boogiepop Phantom have done the best job of horror stuff within anime for me, along with the first few episodes of Higurashi. Notably, they tend to have a great deal more to them than just horror stuff. |

If you found Another Scary, then maybe Mayoiga? Both made me laugh with their attempts at horror and tension so they got something in common. |
I probably regret this post by now. |

Disappointed only 1 person has recommended Ghost Hunt, it's definitely the best of its genre, the scariest horror anime that I've seen. From the comments I've read on the forum, most people find the main 2 arcs to be terrific. Unfortunately the other arcs aren't up to par. Shiki is another one where I was legit afraid of being alone at night after watching it. |

Yeah the animation wasn't good for s1 but i still liked the show very much coz imo jn this case the plot made up for the lack in animation. If it helps the animation in s2 is much better than in s1 :) |

I've never found an anime to be truly scary, although there are a few that can be very unsettling. Higurashi is worth it if you can get into it, the animation is often pretty bad but it's the best anime for horror imo. Shiki, Monster, Shinsekai Yori and Jigoku Shoujo all made me feel uneasy at times, Shiki is especially horror focused. |

not sure what kind of horror are you into visually? atmospherically? psychologically? box of goblins is really appealing to me as a horror slash thriller anime you can feel the tension and creepiness pretty easily if you closely follow its narrative the mystery behind the murderering |

I don't think fictional works have the capacity to be 'scary'. Most of them build tension, create eerie atmosphere, abuse your imagination with established tropes or jump-scare. Anime would have to be incredibly immersive to accomplish even the most basic elements of horror. Most of them bank on empathy and abuse it to no end. As for your inquiry, you're too vague. |

I dont think higurashi is horror either. No creepiness. Just gore with a touch of mystery. (dont get me wrong, I love the series) I'd reccommend Shinsekai Yori. It has creepy atmosphere throughout and some scenes genuinely creeped me out. Some scenes in tasogare otome x amnesia also a bit creepy. but idk if i can recommend it as a whole. also shiki might worth a try |

If you think animation is important, you are a disgrace to the community. You don't even know what good horror is even outside of anime it seems.. . the story is what's important in horror, not how amusing the animation looks, you aren't watching for gore and good fight scenes, and if you are, you are even dumber than i thought. Higurashi represents horror as true horror, not terror like holywood movies do using jumpsscares. Please don't talk about something you don't know shit about, or go watch another genre. |

Perfect Blue is the only one I've seen that was even good. Haven't seen, but are well-recieved: Mononoke, Ghost Hunt, Shiki. Maybe horror; well-recieved: Hellsing, Parasyte, Paranoia Agent. The most garbage "horror" anime, only having gore: Blood-C, Corpse Party, Elfen Lied, Mirai Nikki. |

The one I can definitely think of that’s actually scary is Perfect Blue, that’s the only horror anime that actually scared me and not just creeped me out or unsettled me. It’s one of the only movies I’ve seen that is both dark, disturbing and scary. The soundtrack has this silent hill (video game not movie) vibe where it has this industrial sound and feel to it where it can be very anxiety inducing. The psychological elements are very brilliant and loves fucking with your head. The story isn’t really to praise but the disturbing mature themes really struck a chord with me. Now just for warning it does have graphic depictions of rape, not offscreen, not referenced, you actually see the rape so if that bothers you don’t watch it. |

I think part of the reason is probably because you are East Asian like yourself. People are generally more sympathetic to characters of the same race in live action movies which is very important for good horror. This go doubly so with women, a lot of horror films have female protagonists or victims because people are more sympathetic to female characters than male characters. Cultural background probably plays a big part as well because a lot of western horror outside of monster/killer horror is based on pagan and christian mythology. |
