~ Koutetsujou no Kabaneri ~

Synopsis
"As the world is in the middle of an industrial revolution, a monster appears that cannot be defeated unless its heart, which is protected by a layer of iron, is pierced. By infecting humans with its bite, the monster can create aggressive and undead creatures known as Kabane. On the island Hinomoto, located in the far east, people have built stations to shelter themselves from these creatures. People access the station, as well as transport wares between them, with the help of a locomotive running on steam, called Hayajiro. Ikoma, a boy who lives in the Aragane station and helps to build Hayajiro, creates his own weapon called Tsuranukizutsu in order to defeat the creatures. One day, as he waits for an opportunity to use his weapon, he meets a girl named Mumei, who is excused from the mandatory Kabane inspection. During the night, Ikoma meets Mumei again as he sees Hayajiro going out of control. The staff on the locomotive has turned into the creatures. The station, now under attack by Kabane, is the opportunity Ikoma has been looking for."

Well Just saw the first episode...
it's like a mix of zombie apocalipse with Attack on titan .. they are refugin themselves trying to not die ...
There are some differences like they being on a steam puck ish kind of environment , and they think the "zombies" are a curse..
Still pretty much no explanation so far... they have a weird core on their hearts , people seem to be infected after being bitten.. but only the mc seems to have any clue about how that works.. and was able to reverse it on a pretty bizarre way oO

Hopefully we will get some explanations later xD

So far it's fine ^^

After I saw you put this thread up I went and watched the first episode myself. This is one anime that I was definitely wanting to check out this season.

@Harus, you're right about it being kind of like a steampunk Attack on Titan, but with zombies lol. I like what I'm seeing so far though. And the artwork/animation looks great.

Can't wait to find out how Ikoma did that at the end and how that actually worked. At first I thought he was going to "trap" the so-called curse in his right arm and keep it from spreading, but gain some kind of strength or ability by being part Kabane. I was pretty amazed at how it turned out though.

Also, Ikoma's gun was pretty sweet, but... melee range? Pretty dangerous place to be when fighting a Kabane, as he obviously found out.

Anyway, It's definitely got me interested and wanting more.

Hehehe ~

Yea the animation looks pretty good. First episode was pretty good , hope they keep up the level of action , think they'll explain how he 'reverted' the curse in the next epi.

After watching the first episode I had kind of the same impression as you two, @Harus and @Keishiro. The similarities to Shingeki no Kyojin are undeniable and I have to say that it bothers me a little, especially 'cause the first episode had the same dynamics as the first of SnK.

The outside expeditions on a dangerous enviroment overrun by human killing creatures, the invasion, the guards, the weak brat that wants revenge on the monsters, family members dying in front of each other, those are all elements that are common to both series. There's even an air pressure device strapped on the guards backs (they don't have the same function, but still...).

Putting all that aside, I liked the art, animation and soundtrack. The character design seems fine, nothing very impressive so far (I definetely didn't like that "one lense glass" Ikoma wears! Hahaha).

That "BDSM machine" he uses as a whole body tourniquet to prevent the tainted blood from reaching his brain was pretty freaky, but the speed in which the infection progressed and regressed looked kinda lame, as if it was in fact a spell or curse, not a slow and painful invasion by a virus, bacteria or something like that. Also, if a person suspected of being a Kabane has to be locked for 3 days, as Ikoma said, the contamination should be more gradual. Maybe the speed of the consumption of the body is related to the severity of the wound. Just my opinion, though.

Despite the fact that I might be disappointed down the road "creativity wise", I have to say I enjoyed this beginning and am looking foward to the next episode. Just hope they can differentiate this anime enough so that it won't be seen as a copy of Attack on Titan.

@Kappa_Pie I have to agree with a lot of the points you've made.

It's understandable how some people might be bothered by the similarities to Attack on Titan. I don't want an Attack on Titan copy with a new skin. If the similarities we've seen so far kind stop there and Koutetsujou no Kabaneri becomes its own thing I'll be happy though. Time will tell!

As for the "curse", now that you mention it, it spread super fast on Ikoma compared to the guy at the beginning and the cute girl's bodyguard. Their's didn't seem to spread much at all. Like you said, perhaps it's due to the severity of the wound. Ikoma's was pretty bad! I flinched at the chunk taken out of his arm, and was slightly bothered that it might as well have been a scratch by the way he acted. But I suppose that can be attributed to adrenaline, shock and even some strange effect of the "curse".

Oh and I thought his glasses were kind of silly too lol.

Well the anime was kinda delayed due the earthquake so I waited till now to watch the second episode.

I like that Mumei girl she owned a lot of zombie guys.
Well it was pretty obvious he was something between zumbi and human...

Well if there's something we've learned is .. whenever the humanity is doomed by a creature .. we need a hybrid of it in order to fight back.

Another similarity to Shingeki no Kyojin! Hahaha

But enough about that. I think that this anime will be able to stand on it's own easily, mainly because of the quality of the animation and the exciting action sequences. Everything is very well made and that's what kept me engaged the most.

Still hopping that the plot will develop nicely and stop me from comparing it to AoT! ::)

Watched 4 eps so far, never watched AoT.

This is pretty bad so far, the visual directing is really off, all the elements composing the frames don't mesh well and everything just jumps at the screen as being super shiny or glossy. Characters act like unreasonable pricks in order to make out the other characters as being more relatable. The show keeps pushing the whole prejudice against kabaneri and those suspected of being infected theme but doesn't do anything with it.

The protagonist's main motivation seemed to be his hatred for the way humanity feared the Kabane and handled that fear (by pointing their own guns to other people) but that ended up being discarded for "THEY KILLED MY SISTER REEE" so the only character related thing I was enjoying also ended up getting thrown in the trash. Speaking of characters the designs are awful, as soon as a character is on screen you can immediatly pin point if they're gonna be important or not since important characters worthy of personalities are dressed as special snowflakes (and the ones that are dressed normaly like the train's pilot get some weird colour palette).

The animation and camera work is also pretty poor, poorly weighted jumps and bad camera work, No weight or reaction when objects meet, weight of bodies is shifted wrongly etc. After talking it out with a friend that watched SnK a lot of the plot points and the main flaws that the show has (from a technical point of view) seem similar to SnK so I guess this is a sign I should stay away from that for now. I'm gonna keep watching this though since anime original projects are always worth following for a reason or another.
"The sea spills over the doorsill into the room, and the cockroaches scramble to escape by crawling up the walls. Those not quick enough are caught in the swirling current and float up with it or lie on their backs pretending to be dead."

I don't really like the aimlessness of the plot. I know they're trying to find refuge while fighting the kabane, but so far there is no real hook other than the mysterious long haired character... I hope the plot gets back on track (hehe) in the next few episodes. I still love the main character though, even if he's a crazy mix of weakling and superhero.

And episode 8 failed at convincing me that the "Biba" guy is really evil...
To me it just seems like Ikoma is overreacting and being annoying as usual ... ok the guy has some kabane there for random reasons.. still not enough.

Or maybe I just don't like Ikoma at all and like to disagree with him.

I'm the only person that is kinda disappointed with this anime so far?

I mean they barely give us any decent information about the world, where the other stations are and how the whole kabaneri process works...
The main 'bad' guy has a really weird definition of freedom what makes his goal really unclear, does he want to kill the shogun people for betraying him? what is that world he wants? plus he kinda changed since at a time he saved mumei and now he' doesn't care much about slaughtering innocent people.
Also his motivation is a revenge , that wasn't explained at all... and we are on the episode 9/12 .

Humans aren't very smart on this anime right? I mean... they use the same strategy to infiltrate and dump a bunch of kabane on the fortresses again and again...

The story is pretty weak... this anime only have some good action scenes , the musics are fine too.
