This movie is sad, but cute, and acceptable to my standards. The part at the end when they hug made me cry because they waited so long. I still think this movie could've ended with a happy ending, I mean sure it gives you resolve, but it still leaves this cold empty feeling when she comes back to the town in the end, but I only watched it the first time because of an A.M.V (anime music video) called You can be king again. The music video captures the emotion you feel almost perfectly, although it does make you want to cry even more when you know what the movies about.

I think this film would have been great if it was longer. It would have been nice to seen the relationship between Hotaru and Gin develop more. It ended so suddenly, that it felt disappointing.

7/10 for me. I think if they made a proper full film on this show, it would have been a 9.

One of the few shoujo manga/anime that I enjoyed, but probably because it was so short XD.

I also liked the movie
It was a really nice relationship , but there was no way it was going to work =l

The second he touched that kid in the festival I said "it's a human" ... bingo =l
it's unavoidable to feel bad for the whole situation >_<

I think that it being short was on purpose .

Same here. It was well established that it could end suddenly, and that's exactly what happened.

For me, the timeskips made this issue non-existent. I feel like because of the uniqueness of the situation, we as the audience wouldn't need to know what happens in-between the skips other than what we were given (ex; Hotaru entering middle school etc.) because every year they would do the same thing: go into the woods and be friends for the summer.

I also think that the slightest of gestures shown to us was enough to show that Hotaru and Gin cared for each other greatly. I never had the feeling that either of their emotions/reasonings were bland, unexplainable, or underdeveloped.

There is no need for more. Its a coming of age around a simple moment that changed the life of a person, you dont see what happens next, it would in fact be pointless.

It was a cute movie. I liked both of the main characters and the story was rather simple yet charming. The length was fine as it was just enough to tell the story. My only issue was that the mild romantic undertones were a bit unnecessary. Gin and Hotaru felt more like siblings than a couple. Overall, I gave it an 8/10.

It was predictable, but it worked. Actually, I think the short length helped it a bit because it gives that feeling that you can lose what you are most attached to at any time. They wanted to feel each other so badly, but they know that if they did, they would lose each other. It's quite sad that it had to end that way, but at least they both got what they wanted. It's not perfect, but it did what it needed to do. 7/10 for me.

You see why we men should not get too close to women? If we lose them when they become so close to us, it leaves a very upsetting feeling that lingers for a very long time! Physical contact is the devil! Virgin Master Race forever!

I rewatched this anime and aside the fact is really short movie it's a sweet story. Like life, not everything happens the way we want that's why I liked the end. It's sad like most of love stories.

It's unfair! So what people don't watch stuff because they want to feel upset. Guys watch movies because they like imagining they like to picture themselves as the hero who gets the girl. Girls watch movies because they like the sappy romance where it's as quoted from many romance movies "a fateful encounter." I don't think many people watch movies to see how 'realistic' it is. In reality the guy doesn't get the girl because he saved her life, he got the girl because he decided to call her an idiot, in other words the good guy never wins in reality. In the rare case when the super hot, super nice, good guy gets the girl in real life all the other girls hate the girl because she got the guy they wanted. This movie is a representation of why people say they don't believe in love.

I pride myself very well at holding back my tears in front of the guys so they don't laugh at me.

With this I failed. This was cute, sad, and quite beautiful in my opinion. My heart dropped into the pit of my stomach when he started to fade away. 8/10 cause I'm a sap and I think it was wonderful for it's length.

Oh, is that so? Well then, we better make the next movie one where we will be really feeling it. It's December, the month where feeling it is at its best (and worst). Make me cry, people!

No shame in crying when you have something to cry about, but if you have nothing to cry about and you cry anyway than you need to man up and wipe the tears away because the best part in life is that you can get people to smile just because your smiling. Laugh like you're going to live forever, smile like there's no tomorrow, be happy because you can be, not because they told you that you have to be. Prove to everyone that the worst thing they'll ever live through is being on your bad side. Life motto. Prove it to yourself, not to the outsiders who sit and watch while you get back up to prove to yourself that you can, not to prove to them that you don't care because if you honestly don't care you won't notice that you have anything to prove.

^This Pretty much what I was thinking as well....

It is sad, but they got much more than just being able to hug each other...
Hotaru's chest will hurt, her tears will overflow but that love shall last forever.
Yes, living on in her heart, keeping her warm...

So someone on the One Punch Man thread was talking about being late to the party, well I think I'm more than late to the party on this but I felt like I wanted to write something anyways because honestly...I got nothing better to do right now XD.

So with this only being 45 minutes, I thought it was more fair to go into this show as it was a OVA instead of a movie. In example if you were to watch Pale Cocoon. That is even shorter. It's 23 minutes. So on time wise it would be more like Koe de Oshigoto! The Animation which is 60 minutes.

Now I use those as examples and not Akatsuki no Yona: Sono Se niwa or Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun: Tonari no Gokudou-kun because by the time you watch those you have 12-26 episodes of character and story progression and it's a clear competitive advantage. So even though you look at those in a stand alone perspective too. You have the history in your mind of the show to fullback on.

I really liked Pale Cocoon though. It was very intriguing setting but I could help but to think what this could of been if it was a full series and I was only able to give it a 7 out of 10. So that is where we transition into talking about the topic in hand. Is 46 minutes enough to constitute breaking the barriers that Pale Cocoon couldn't?

I think a lot of that is going to have to be through it's presentation. We see Hotaru growing in age throughout the 45 minutes. Giving us glimpses of how she changes. That seemed to fulfill the character progression part.

There is two main points in the story line
Gin can never be touched and that Hotaru eventually will be older than Gin as the years continue to progress.

When watching I couldn't help but think of Gin as a little kid having a imaginary friend. I am the oldest child in my family and had a imaginary friend until the age of 9. I eventually was able to fill that void when I finally had another sibling. But Hotaru continues on because Gin is actually real but we as the viewer only have that as a connection to the situation. So I wouldn't value this connection so highly.

By this time we have also eclipse the time of Pale Cocoon.
We are able to have one more factor into the story that is love.
This factor is able to utilize the both of the beginning factors.

But...sadly they didn't go down the right path of human temptation.
Being so short, having a outside factor being the reason why Gin disappear irked me.
Then my desire for this to be a full movie was there too. This happened when the other spirits were talking to Hotaru after Gin disappeared. It would of been nice if we had Hotaru not only befriending Gin but the other spirits as well. So that we would have a better connection to the love the spirits had with Gin but it is left more of just a side condiment. A little dash of pepper.

So in conclusion, I think the time was not the issue here.
I think you can give a stand alone a 8 or 9 with only being 45 minutes but because of that 45 it has to be centralized. The conclusion needed to be more of a direct correlation between Hotaru and Gin instead of a outside influence. That made the ending feel rushed and made you feel more thinking of what could of been.

So my score on the show is going to be a 6/10. It is average.
It gets lower than Pale Cocoon because I have disappointment with the ending.
There was no disappointment with Pale Cocoon.

I know i´m approximately a billion years late on this but i just finally watched this movie and i have to share my frustration over that ending.

Because i really thought it was a beautiful and bittersweet coming of age story, and as a viewer it´s pretty obvious early on that Gin will disappear in the end. The way this was put on screen was very unsatisfying for me.

It came out of the blue and got waaaay to little screentime. I wanted to see much more of the emotions of both of them as they have to part finally. I also wanted to see how Hotaru deals with this loss in the few days, weeks or months after...i wanted to see how all these beautiful summers had an influence on her life when she becomes an adult.

The movie could´ve told all this, but it instead just stops. All these wonderful sceneries and dialogues got undone completely by one of the most disappointing endings i have ever seen.

Honestly, I think this was the whole point. It illustrates how you can lose things that are important to you in the blink of an eye. Many people don't even have the chance to say their goodbyes so the fact that the two of them were together at the end was satisfying in and of itself. While I do wish that the ending could have been much more emotional, I think it was handled relatively well for a 40-something minute film.

That´s true, but it´s not like showing how she deals with the situation changes the point of the movie. It still remains the same. I just felt like the ending made few scenes that happened before a waste of the precious 40 minutes they had. A few scenes could have been way shorter, but certain frames were kept on screen longer because they look so pretty visually.
The time won there could´ve been used at the end. I can´t help it, it felt anticlimactic and it wasted a chance to move me a little...something that Furiko achieved in 3 minutes lol
