~ Mononoke Hime ~

[center]Synopsis

"A calm village residing in the mountains comes under attack from a demon-possessed boar one day.
Ashitaka, a young man and prince of the tribe, engages the creature in an attempt to save his village. During the battle, the boar bites him on the arm, leaving it blackened and cursed. Following his village's traditions, Ashitaka is exiled and becomes a wanderer, looking for a solution to the curse before it engulfs him.
Iron Town is a fortress under the leadership of Lady Eboshi. Through the clearing of the surrounding forests, Iron Town produces large amounts of Ironsand, used for gunpowder and other machinery. However, because of the forests destruction, nearby animal clans seek revenge led by a human girl of the Wolf clan called San.
When Ashitaka comes to Iron Town, he discovers the area consumed in battle. Horrified, he attempts to create peace and befriend the Wolf Clan. However, after the forest's eradication and the ongoing war between Human and Beast, will the Spirit of the Forest be forgiving and accept Ashitaka's request to expel his curse?"

Just watched this last night so it's still pretty fresh in my mind. I guess I'll present my opinion in the form of a mini-review:

Mononoke Hime is a pretty good movie but it's a bit overrated. The themes are presented in a very effective and interesting way, what with the whole nature vs. industrialization thing. The characters themselves are rather complex, causing the viewer not to view any of them as being wholly good or evil. The art was decent but the smooth animation was far ahead of its time. The music was also excellent and fit the scenes very well. The problem with Mononoke Hime however, is the fact that it lacks a proper interesting climax, much like many other Studio Ghibli films. It just goes: God gets head blown off -> people grab the head -> MCs retrieve the head without much conflict -> God grabs head, dies, and causes plants to return to the area -> End of story. The movie also lacks a proper conclusion scene and feels like it ends halfway through the falling action. Overall, I gave the movie an 8/10. It's worth watching, but isn't the best thing I've ever seen.

For now I will use what I said to Phil

So I will just say out of the bat that the movie was really great..
The animation was really really good, I was surprised by the quality level even thought the movie is from 1997. The musics were also pretty good and were able to keep the movie level.

I liked the main character he was pretty skilled, and after he arm was possessed omg those bow skills.. he was ripping arms and heads with an ARROW! Hahahah I laugh so much at that hahaha xD
His deer,Yakul, is also pretty amazing and I really liked that it was a different animal to see on the anime world (also pretty well animated).
I love wolves so all the wolves are awesome by default ~
San was pretty nice too, I just think she deserved more screen time (moar!!). Also I have to mention the cute lil guys , aka kodamas. They were cute , spooky and fun at the same time haha.

Story wise the anime is also pretty interesting, brings the whole natural pure world against human corruption theme, but it shows both sides and a main character that can't really decide what to do.. he just do what he feels like it's right all the time. (which is good and bad)
The story, to me, had 4 sides;
Wild, Tatara Ba , the emperor Will (that was represented by Jiko) and the Samurais that were there just be being troublesome. I think the story handled well those sides but the samurais were pretty much there to be annoying or to show tatara ba strength, since it's a movie and it's limited to the 2 hours I understand the lack of explanation on some of those relations but still is something to mention.

I have to mention that maybe one of my favorite parts is when Ashitaka decides to be a bad ass .. He goes in the middle of everyone stop San and Eboshi... takes a shot... opens the gate and keep walking like nothing happened~ Haha

for me it's a 9/10 , maybe someone can try to convince me to give it a 10 tho xD

@Cheez
I understand what you are saying about not haveing a climax.. there was more like a climax part of the film but not a climax part , i guess.
Not sure if I agree that is overrated you have to take into consideration it was made in 1997

Mononoke Hime tells the story of a boy who seeks to save himself from the cursed type known as Steel. He goes to a town where Steel is being produced. When he learns of its effects to the life around the town, he learns of the Fairy wolves and the Fairy Girl. The Fairy Girl did not welcome the Steel-cursed boy because she did not think that he would understand the feelings of the fairies. But he needed a cure for his Steel curse, so the fairy girl guides him to meat Xerneas, the deer who grants life to those around him. Unfortunately, there are those who wanted the head of Xerneas, and they succeed doing so thanks to sheer force and the drive of their greed. What they did not know was that when Xerneas was harmed, he would spill the curse of the fairies over the land. Not even the power of Steel could stop him. The fairy curse spread throughout the land, consuming any human too foolish to stand in its way. In a last attempt to save themselves, the fairy girl and steel-cursed boy retrieve Xerneas' head and offer it to him. By doing so, the fairy curse is lifted from the land, and Xerneas becomes peaceful once again. The damage was done, but the humans survived and began to rebuild their homes. But because of their nature, the Fairy girl and the Steel Boy could never be together, but they do promise to see each other again.

lol Taro that´s a very interesting summary ^^

Soooooooo i have Mononoke Hime as my favorite movie of all time and here is why:

1. I always loved Miyazaki for being able to tell simple messages through amazing stories. This story is fantastic. It does not judge anyone, it does not label anyone a pro-or antagonist. All you have is a bunch of people who do what they feel is the right thing to do for their own reasons. You can either pick one side of the conflict OR you can do what Ashitaka does. Learn both sides of the story, develop your own opinion and act according to it.

2. Despite this being set in a war like scenario with blood flowing and heads flying around, it is still quite family friendly. This is very important as those who are still able to learn about the message behind this anime are predominantly young and should watch this movie with their parents.

3. The characters are amazing. Ashitaka with his sense for justice who tries to end the whole war and slowly winning everyone´s acceptance and trust depsite flip-flopping between both parties as he pleases, San who has to learn through Ashitaka that not all humans are evil, Lady Eboshi who is meant to be hated but can´t be for her actions we do NOT see on screen, freeing all these people in the iron city.

4. It´s Ghibli. They have been so far ahead of their time when it comes to animation back in the 90s. This movie looks beautiful and i´ve seen sub-2005 movies that don´t look anyway near as good.

5. I generally have a weak spot for ancient time Japan and/or predominantly rural settings. My favorite anime ever Samurai Champloo has such a setting, Shinsekai yori ended up on my Favorites list and currently i am really enjoying Mushishi. The similar setting is what all of those shows have in common along with Mononoke. It makes for a relaxing atmosphere.

6. I think it´s Joe Hisaishis best Score. The music is beautiful and could not fit the movie any better. I listen to the main piece of music in this very regularly.

It´s a 10 on my list, the only movie that ever got a 10. I was searching for flaws, points to deduct...and could not find anything. I found flaws in Howls Moving Castle, in (oscar winning) Spirited Away, in Nausicaa and in Castle in the Sky, but not here...

I love this movie a lot. I rewatched it ten times at least and it still amazes me.

Haha I know I remembered Xerneas(even though I don't know his name) when I saw.. the deer... chicken.. monkey thing god too.

@Phil
I'm not sure I would so far to the point of saying that it has no flaws .
I agree with the no labels on characters.. it's a strong point of the show indeed. ^^

I think that the final score for this movie is a 9 , + or - 1.. depending on peoples tastes ^^

Well I finally picked this up, laying around in my never ending to-watch list, and as I expected, ghibli didn't fail to amaze me.

The story started well surprisingly well, the action between the boar demon, immidately catching my attention, and making me want to continue watching more. The story overall was incredible, although the ending felt a bit lacklaster, and makes me imagine, how great this would have been, if it was longer, allowing more development of the mononoke hime, of her past and relationship build up with her and the main character etc.

One thing to note, is that there was no true villain to the story. The main character remained completely neutral, helping both sides when they needed it. This could mean that neither the human side or the nature side is correct, that conflict is sometimes necessary for each spieces to survive. The forces of the forest wants to kill the humans to protect their home, while the humans wants to mine the iron ore in the mountains, so they can trade it and keep their standard of living.

As expected from ghibli, the animation was constant throughout, but I didn't pay attention to the music because I was so hooked on the story XD.

I did a little bit of reading on this film after watching it, as ghibli films tend to have a moral message behind it, but was surprised there isn't really one in this film. Of course one can interpret it as a message to live along with nature instead of trying to destroy each other, but I'm not quite sure what this film was supposed to tell us.

Here's basically a small summary of a analysis of this film:

Eboshi, the "leader" of the iron works town, can be seen to represent the evolving society of humans. The first thing to note, is that she is female, which was considered as a minority in Japan at this time. They were considered as simply just a tool, who were expected to just cook and look after the children for their husbands. However we could see immidately, that Eboshi was a strong, independent woman, not even afraid of going up against the deer God and his powerful followers. She teaches her female followers, to be independent, and even allows them to learn the use of guns, so they can defend themselves. This could show the rise of the independence of women in the 20th century, which can be one of the key points in the evolution of society. Another thing to note is the guns she uses to defend her people against the samurai and the protectors of the forest. Before Eboshi and her guns came to iron works, the people living there were forced to survive off the iron in the sands, as they could not mine into the mountains for iron, due to the powerful forces of nature preventing them. However this completely changed after the people obtained the guns, and suddenly, the followers of the deer God was on the losing side. This can represent once again the evolution of humans, who once started as simple animals, ruled by nature, but now strong enough to stand against it.

But in the end, even the guns cannot stop the power of the forest god. We saw the body of the God destroying the forest and the town, after his head was blown off, the humans and animals, unable to do anything but run. This can be seen to represent the fact that humans kind will never be able to stand up against nature, natural disaster such as earthquakes, being too powerful for us to control. But like in the film, where the people will simply rebuild the village, we will survive one disaster after another and consistently try to find more solutions, more methods to control such forces. This film can be represented as the power of human evolution, where we will constantly try and learn to be more stronger, more intelligent and more powerful. On day humans might have the power of what can only be described as God.

Overall I think I rate this film a 8. The characters were well potrayed, the animation is at a high standard (considering this was produced in 1997) and the story of course being very well constructed.

It has always been one of my favorites, it sucks me in no matter how many times I've seen it, which is really hard for most things xD I hgave and always will give it a 10/10 because of that ^.^ but reding all your reviews and seeing the different takes on this movie was nice soo..

Yes the fact that there's no right side is really interesting , and I think there's message in the movie.. it just ins't clear...
It makes you think about it , the human nature interaction.. can't that be a message?

I'm really glad that this was the featured movie. It gave me a reason to go ahead experience the beauty of it. I have no clue how long I would of delayed watching this if it hadn't been the featured movie.

I'm just going to go ahead and point out the obvious first: the graphic and audio quality is insane. Studio Ghibli is no stranger to quality productions. I would feel very sad if somebody that it used to newer animation say that this "looks old". For me personally though, I found the sound effects, music, and voice acting to be the real icing on the cake. Everything from the animal noises, to the ambient sounds, to the characters talking, all of it was music to my ears. Perhaps the only thing I didn't like on the audio side of things was a few of the minor character voices like Gonza or Toki but that might just be me.

I'm not going to lie, was rather confused for the first hour what the true story was really about. Perhaps I was just being an imbecile. However, once I finally started realizing why characters were doing certain things, I began to appreciate it a lot more. One small thing that stood out to be was how accepting San was of Ashitaka. Sure, she wasn't 100% trusting of him but it was a rather fast transition from her holding a blade against his throat to saving his life.

Now up until the last 20 or so minutes, I was ready to give this movie a 9/10. For me, that is a rare score. But... it didn't get a 9/10 because of how it ended. With all of the imagination that had gone into the rest of the movie, I was rather shocked at how predictable the ending was. I haven't read anyone else's thoughts on the movie yet so I have no clue if I'm the only one that feels this way. The way Jiko described the Deer God as a god of death had me hopeful for a dark or more twisted ending. But, I'm sure some people would disagree with me and prefer the happy ending that we got instead. Another small thing that really got was how Jiko and Eboshi had a sudden personality change at the end. They showed next to no sense of failure or denial.

Overall, I gave this movie a 8/10 and I go by MAL's rating system so that would equate to this movie as being very good. Despite an ending that I was less than thrilled about, the movie was very enjoyable overall and extremely well made. My personal favorite part from the movie was when San infiltrated the "Iron town". It filled me with so much energy and I'm really thankful that I got the chance to see this movie.

P.S. I'm a sucker for animal-companion charcters (Yakul) lol

This is also my first time writing a reflection or anything of the sort about an anime so if I'm completely wrong about something or make no sense, I'm sorry. (I also didn't proofread any of this LOL)

I'm glad our featured movie helped you to watch this Movie, it is indeed a really good one.
I agree with you on the visual qualities , sound effects, everything really great.

Some have commented before that the ending was a bit "disappointing" or rather , that people were expecting more.. I guess the show putted a really high level of expectations to be fair.
I liked the ending, to me the problem was not having a real climax .. we had some good action but no real ending climax I think.

About the personality of Jiko and Eboshi it's hard to tell, everyone have such diverse personalities on this show... you can't really say "this guys is bad" or something like that.. I didn't saw that much change on their personalities.

btw Yakul is awesome! ^^

Hm, I had the feeling they wanted the story to be a bit like a fairy-tale, so I'm not that unhappy with the ending, though I agree it was really abrupt. And a darker ending would have been interesting, too, but I think for me the happy one fits better in this case.

I agree, I loved Yakul too! <3

Yes, their design is similar but cuz there is some folkrore about deer behind that influences

...
what following next is some mythology about deer, not really related with the movie so you can ignore this post >_<

well, there is many deer stories that xerneas is based, the idea of a deer as god of forest is used in many histories (tho my memory is falling me to recall the stories and google is not helping me neither)
one example is snowwhite and the huntman

About the inspiration of Xerneas:

"Xerneas can be inspired by the white deer of Nara, divine messenger from Japanese mythology who lived in a forest of Heijō.

There is also speculation that could be inspired by the fusion of the four creatures from Norse mythology like deer (Dainn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Durapror) living in the trunk of Yggdrasil, the great tree of Norse cosmology. They have a gem in the antlers of a different color each (blue, crimson, yellow, purple / black respectively). Some people also believes it was inspired on Ceryneian Hind ( It was sacred to Artemis, It had golden antlers like a stag and hooves of bronze or brass, and it was said that it could outrun an arrow in flight.)"

A bit more about White deer of Nara: "According to local folklore, deer from this area were considered sacred due to a visit from Takemikazuchi-no-mikoto, one of the four gods of Kasuga Shrine. He was said to have been invited from Kashima, Ibaraki, and appeared on Mt. Mikasa-yama riding a white deer. From that point, the deer were considered divine and sacred by both Kasuga Shrine and Kōfuku-ji"

also I will mention Cerunnos "Cernunnos was often portrayed with antlers himself, and was a god of the forest and wild animals. He was also seen as a god of 'Plenty', and the large Celtic 'Cauldrons of Plenty' often featured deer motifs amongst their ornate decoration." to he was more human with antlers

and also I will name the endless forest game

^^ this movie holds a special spot in my heart, it was the first Miyazaki movie I watched and the amazing story, beautiful and evocative music, and relatable characters had me rooted... the themes are profound and like Miyazaki's other works, they are told via creative and compelling stories... on a personal level, this is perhaps my number one favorite animated movie, with maybe "Song of the Sea" placed very very close :')
