You want to tell me it's neither a harem nor a shonen? Come on seriously?

Shounen isn't a genre though. It's like calling game of thrones adult as a genre.

Don't be too critical of Mal genres, they're by no means official.

Everywhere Kirito goes, there is often a girl besides him. But them gathering together as a harem is rare. In fact, they assemble at the end of the first season, and there is only one arc when they all acted together in 2 seasons. Also, everybody knows that Asuna is the winner, which takes out a lot of harem tension.

It isn't a shounen fighting anime like Naruto or Bleach, but its target audience is teenage boys and there is fighting in it.

I'm sorry to say, but Shounen manga and anime is in fact a genre. However it is just a giant umbrella, like Shoujo. Not to be mistaken with Bishounen or Bishoujo which are themes, and not genres. Like Seinin and Jousen anime and manga, Shounen and Shoujo are media that cater to a wide variety of young boys or girls with themes that tend to appeal to them like action, adventure, romance, drama, male or female leads, harems or "reverse" harems, giant robot, magical girl, ect. I know I'm probably not telling y'all anything you don't already know, but its just like american cartoons and comics that are geared more towards kids rather than adult. Magical world of Gumball vs Family. Rugrats vs Rick and Morty. Only difference is that we don't make specific categories so vocal. Just mature an not mature.

Weekly Shounen JUMP published I''s and Strawberry 100%, being two manga series that don't fit the traditional mold of a Shounen manga, but because the over all series catered to young boys between the ages of 12 and 18 and had dynamic art it was marketed as a slice of life harmen, which never happens and hasn't since Ah, My Goddess! with Dark Horse. Shounen is Shounen and is as undeniable as what makes a cyber punk or a mystery. Coming of age stories for boys.
Hope is only a distraction. REAL skill comes without effort.

Also, the difference between a theme and a genre is that the genre is what the plot, characters and environment center around. Themes are colorful little devices that make the story more interesting.

Sword Art Online is a Shounen Sci-Fi Drama with themes including harem, survival horror (man vs nature/machine), cyber punk and any other little things you can pick up on from girls with glasses to striped panties. Look at the bigger picture
