At one point there was a spin-off OVA planned for 2000-2001 that (obviously) never happened. Does anyone know why "Vampire Princess Yui" was cancelled?

Not too sure why the concept was abandoned by Studios in Japan, but it's a damn shame because the plot of Yui would be a great spin-off! We would find out about the 'Shi' and would get plenty of crossover with Miyu & Larva making regular appearances.

I really wish someone would give the Miyu/Yui franchise a modern reboot

This is a statement posted by Anime International Company on their now defunct English website, which in itself hadn’t been updated since 2006, in their FAQ section for sequels: “"Vampire Yui" and "Lin3": These two projects are on hold at the moment. We are sorry to have kept you fans waiting without a proper explanation. As soon as we have further news, we will announced it on this website.”

Depressing, but not surprising at this point. The franchise deserved better.

The Vampire Princess Miyu IP is currently held by AIC RIGHTS and Hirano Office, and AIC RIGHTS recently entered into an business alliance with Toei Agency. Which now means they will jointly own the rights for Tenchi Muyo, Megazone 23, Bubblegum Crisis, and many more. Though, Vampire Princess Miyu wasn't mentioned in the deal, so it probably wasn't included in the deal with Toei Agency. Hopefully something good comes out of the new deal.

At this point it feels like they've given up on the franchise, which is strange considering the manga part of the IP ran for a REALLY long time in the form of various sequels, AUs, and spin-offs. (the final series ended in 2020) Can't imagine it would have run for so long if there wasn't profit to be made.
