The numbers that you see are indexes, basically they give an indication of how many viewers there are. Basically think of tasting food, in reality is the same process, where you take a little bit of the food and with that you can with a degree of certainty know about the taste of the entire dose. In this case this is done for all Japan, where the little bit is taken of Kanto, the biggest populated and with more Viewership area. Kanto has 42.5 Million people. There is data for almost all areas in Japan, but that you can only get paying, without payment the Kanto area is considered to be enough to indicate Japan viewership. In the past we got also information of another area(I don't remember what are was) and while different it was almost the same as kanto. Unless the area is totally abnormal it will get around the same values as Kanto. Now to a little more specifics. These indexes aren't measuring people viewership, there are indexes that measure that, but the ones that we see aren't those(For number of people and even their age and sex are provided with payment). What we see is the Households index. Basically they count the number of houses with TV sets that are watching the given series. This indexes are calculating through statistic sampling, and that doesn't give an exact number, but a probability interval of certainty. What does that mean, it gives us an epicenter of an interval with a certain radius. This interval is not the exact interval of the viewership, but it has a given probability connected with it. The interval radius for this rating kind of ratings is 1.8, and the probability is 98%. Meaning that the 3.3% of Kanto household rating of 3 gatsu no Lion is the epicenter of the interval that goes from 1.5% to 5.1%(3.3 - 1.8 and 3.3 + 1.8). The series is rated around that interval with a 98% of certainty. Meaning if we calculated 100 weeks where the result was the same than this one, than 98 times it we would be right in that the value is between 1.5 and 5.1. This means that unless this one time is one of the 2 only unreliable singularities we would get in 100, than we got the right interval. Note: I don't know the number of households in the Kanto region so I will use the number of people instead. Though remember that it is calculated by the household not the number of people. So 3-gatsu no Lion got somewhere around 637,500 to 2,167,500 viewers in Kanto region with 98% of certainty! Assuming that the other areas were around the same of kanto region viewership, which they are, we have that it got somewhere around 1,912,500 to 6,502,500 viewers in Japan(with 98% certainty)! 4.2 Million is the middle point of that interval. |
