automatic resize of images (avatar, profile images, forums, etc)

in other forums they have the ability to resize a large image to fit the forums layout like this one http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=505050.0
and to see the original larger version they just click on it and sometimes on other forums it will have scroll bars to not destroy the forum layout too

but for avatars and profile images i do not have an example code for that but its possible to code that although different since avatars and profile images will be resize permanently to reduce the file size and save bandwidth
