Woman on the Boat?

Decided to rewatch Haruhi again and booted up the Remote Island Syndrome arc.

However, something in the intro confused me. There is a woman whose face we cannot see, tearing up what seems to be a letter and some photographs.

Is she some sort of secret character that is later introduced in the novels or just some visual fluff?

Itsuki and Kyon seemed to be watching her so i was just wondering.
(Shes probably nothing but i just couldnt help thinking!)
