I almost blew this game to toimen's shenanigans.

With South 4 in the lead, I was ready to walk out of this game the winner. But alas, I got hit here. I saw the three 3-man in toimen's discard, presuming that 2-man is relatively safe. I wasn't all that ready to tear my hand apart. After all, toimen as last oya can simply go on a roll and take the game.

Well that certainly did suck, but my next game more than made up for it.

I started the game sitting east, and I ended the game in East 1. With over 100k points.

I watched the replay several times and made a few observations.

E 1-0: I might have been able to get Suuankou if I didn't ron that 7m. Of my three pairs, only one - the 8m - had been drawn. There was still one more of those, as well as both of each 9m and 4p tiles to draw from the wall. But getting greedy for higher scoring hands can end in disappointment, which is exactly what happened in E 1-3. And I wasn't yet aware of the insane luck I would have this game.

E 1-1: I wanted to have a better wait than the tanki wait for 2p. I thought I got just that when I drew the 4m, giving me a wait of 14m, but actually, all of the remaining 1m tiles had already been discarded. I think I made the right choice anyway, as the other players would have probably kept their 2p tiles if I hadn't discarded it with my riichi.

E 1-2: The best hand. I had gotten tenpai for sanshoku, tanyao, dora 2 (possibly 3). I decided to damaten and go for a better wait and pinfu, and I got just that when I drew the red 5m, so I called riichi and then ippatsu tsumo'd. I had a bit of luck with the tsumo, too; if I had gotten the 9m it would have broken my sanshoku and tanyao.

E 1-3: As my hand gravitated toward ryanpeiko, a yaku that I very rarely get (only once or twice ever), I had to go for it. But in retrospect, I should have just cut the 3p and waited for 15p. I would have ippatsu ronned toimen and probably ended the game right there. But it ended in a draw, with him holding two of the 4s I needed, and shimocha holding the last one. I noticed also that, for some reason, toimen didn't ron my 5m discard. Not sure if he was AFK or clicked on the wrong button, but I'm not complaining!

E 1-4: At this point, I was feeling determined to try to end the game in East 1. Toimen's riichi made me a bit nervous, so I thought I should try to end the hand quickly. I called the chii on kamicha's 6s discard, which put me in tenpai. Discarding the west tile against the west player's riichi with only one in the pond was rather risky, but luckily it wasn't his wait. I found it funny that this time around he had a tanki wait for 4p, and I was holding two of them.

E 1-5: After shimocha's riichi, I drew the 7s tile completing that ankou. I think it might have been smarter to discard that and keep those as the pair, while trying to complete the pin sequences, though that may have proven difficult with kamicha's pon of the 5p tiles. However, the 3p was the suji to the 6p that kamicha discarded safely, so I had a feeling it might be safe too, despite how many times I've been caught by that trap.. And of course, I was playing to win at this point, so I took the risk, and it paid off immediately. The only thing I really had to worry about is dealing into a yakuman, and how often does that happen? LOL

E 1-6: I said jokingly in IRC that I should end the game with a yakuman, and holy shit I thought it might actually happen when I drew the chun. I really hoped to get another one, but it's probably best that I didn't since toimen was holding the other two hatsu anyway. I got a bit nervous when he pon'd the west tile, which was both his seat and the dora. In the end, he was in tenpai waiting for 36p. It just so happened that I was also waiting for the 6p and I drew it!

I pretty much sat back in this game, until my South oya turn came up. And I was able to capitalize to end up with the lead, until I couldn't push no longer and the previous points leader took his spot back.

I could have won this game, with the hand prior to Oorasu. I kept the Nan tiles thinking that they were live - and I completely forgot about the one discarded earlier in my own pile. That left me with an atozuke situation, where I was unknowingly furiten.

Long ass 20-hand game; and I got 2nd. After a fairly short East round, the game took a turn with an elongated South round.

It was interesting noting toimen, who held a fairly comfortable lead - only to suffer a massive collapse in the South round.

In my case, despite my rant from the "daisangen game" - I still went with the 3-6 sou nobetan - instead of the 5-8 pin, for mentanpin. I doubted the availability of that 5-8; so I went 3-6. It was a lifesaving ippatsu. After getting hit in the next hand, I pretty much sat back and watched the others get hit.

Thankfully, the daisangen threat was null and void due to my possession of chun toitsu.

Bah. After discarding 3-man - I gave myself a breather, 'cause the wait could have been 3-6 man. However, after that, I presumed it to be 6-9 man. However, that thought instantly changed the minute I drew the dora 5-pin. After proceeding to discard 9-man, my initial presumption was correct.

Ugh...

Essentially, I spent this game bascially immobile throughout. As soon as my last oya turn came, things felt a bit different. Winning that one hand was proof enough. Too bad, I could have done more with it -- if I had not called on chun so quickly.

To be honest, I entered this game - thinking that I shouldn't be playing; but I chose to play anyways.

Needing just a 2nd in order to make it to 4-dan, I did not get it. In fact, I flat out lost. After getting hit for an oya 4 and 30, I could not dig out of that hole.

Yea, I should have gotten rid of that 6-pin as soon as I got rid of the 7-pin. However, I felt that 4-man would have been more dangerous later on. So, I got rid of that first; but the 6-pin instantly became poison.

Blah, I took a harder loss this time.

Anyways, toimen's "yakuless" pose was rather threatening. When I noticed that both Ton and Chun were live, then I presumed that they're in possession of Toimen.

Decided to try Tenhou on a whim recently, and now I'm addicted to it plus it's great for trying to improve my skill in mahjong by playing against humans rather than computers as a relatively new player. A few games I played recently:

In east 2, I called 2 late kans and could've potentially got a rinshan kaihou in both instances. The dora wasn't helpful to me either. Eventually tsumo'd a red 5man anyway for a mangan.
Won with a chiitoitsu honitsu dealer's mangan in east 3, dealer repeat 1. Could've tried to go for a toitoi, but couldn't be bothered to wait for the tiles I guess, especially with the hell wait for the east and west tiles.

I was in tenpai with honitsu in east 1 and east 2.
In east 3, I win with a haneman. I was initially going for a chanta, but after I drew a 2sou at turn 7 (which was the dora), I decided to try go for a toi toi to increase the value of my hand.
In east 4, I win with a baiman thanks to the ippatsu and the ura-dora of another green dragon.
I finish the game off in south 2, dealer repeat 3 where I score a dealer's haneman, which is thanks to yet another ippatsu and the ura-dora. It was a hell wait for a red dragon, but figured someone would throw it out eventually unless it was hiding in the dead wall.

I was doing really badly at the start since I dealt into a dealer's mangan in east 3, dealer repeat 1. Then I dealt into another mangan in the following round.
I was in tenpai with chanta and sanshoku in east 2, but waiting for someone to discard that dora was probably unlikely.
However, I made a comeback in south 1 where I scored a haneman (consisting of open tanyao toi toi plus 3 doras).
Then in the following round (south 2), I scored a dealer's haneman consisting of a honitsu shousangen. I could've potentially got a daisengen yakuman, but decided against it since a player declared riichi.
Then in the following round (south 2, dealer repeat 1), I scored a dealer's mangan consisting of a honitsu.
Then I finished off the game with a haneman in south 4, which ended the game with me having 58,800 points.
