For a while now I've heard people say that they stay depressed for a full week or month after finishing Clannad, which makes me wonder why people go to it, I just finished Toradora and loved it and moved onto "The world only God knows". Only recently I found that It's a rom-com which as of now is my favorite genre.

Basically I will watch Clannad and Clannad: After Story upon ONE condition:

The ending is a happy kind of sad, as in sad to see it go or something. If it ends where everyone is dead, the city is burning and the MC is helpless or something, then I am staying FAR away.

Summary: Does this end where everything is like that for the better or the worst?

I watched all of Clannad waiting for that moment that made a lot of people go "OMG SADDEST ANIME EVARRR".

I didn't feel anything.

When I watched Clannad and After Story I didn't affect me as much as other people when it finished. Your decision if you want to go ahead and watch it or not. Take a look at some reviews if you really can't decide.

Let me make the question more breif:

Ending

1) Happy kind of sad?
2) Depressing kind of sad?

Watch it. The first season ending is happy. Second season though it gets sad, but not like what you say the city burns down or something like that. It gets sad, but the ending is just like in the first season.

I'll keep it short specially since I am a Clannad fanboy.
I would say the condition imposed on the ending applies.

Season 1 (Clannad) is essentially a high school romcom that follows this formula (Introduction>MC helps girl 1> 2-3 Comedy episodes> MC helps girl 2>2-3 Comedy Episodes>..after helping them all..>ends up with one of them)

Season 2 (After Story) continues on from that point and shifts onto Drama as the main focus and the hardships the couple will have to overcome. Of course, the number of touching scenes significantly multiplies.

I recommend watching it when you're going over one of those emotionally sensitive phases.

If your only reservation about watching it is the fear of being sad, than just nut up and watch it. There are a few depressing parts but it's bittersweet overall. You're not gonna be getting an End of Evangelion here, you're safe.

Basically...

1st season: Happy ending (sort of)

2nd season: Made as a happy ending, but it's depressing either way. It's good if you mentally bond with the characters (that sounds cheesy, I know). This is hard to explain without spoilers...

Just watch it.

You say that, but you have Sekirei in your top 5. I don't think you have a good grasp of what kills brain cells, just saying.

But seriously you won't know if you'll like Clannad until you watch it, I watched it expecting to hate it and was surprised by the show in several ways especially in S2.
Ooo, what a lovely tea party.

Your typical romance/harem anime ends with the protag confessing his love, they kiss, cut to credits. One of the reasons Clannad is brilliant is it takes you to that point, then Afterstory actually takes a look at what happens after that cut-to-black, something anime rarely does. Even though Clannad is inferior, it's kind of necessary to get you to that point to contrast with what comes after.

Clannad is one of the best animes ever (in my opinion). It's true that it gets very emotional at times but it's because of that, that I think most people fall in love with it. You should definitely watch it you will not be unsatisfied. It had a great ending in my opinion too, and plus the english dub was really good.

I should clarify abit about angel beats and clannad

If you thinking sad ending for angel beats moved you into tears, then clannad AS have same stuff.

Else, comedy in Angel Beats is similar to 1st season of Clannad.

You watched Angel Beats! then just watch Clannad.
The better question here is why should you (OP) not?

By that logic, everything in the "slice of life" genre isn't really worth watching since they don't really have big plots. A solid plot that keeps going forward isn't always critical to the quality of something. If you do something correctly, something as simple as people living out their lives as a simple person can be seen as a truly great story. Besides, you're comparing action shonen stories like FMA to a drama/tragedy like Clannad. These two things are very different.

But yeah. Clannad and Clannad After Story. Totally worth your time, OP.
And I mean that in the most sexually painful way possible.

Come on, Clannad isn't that bad.
The animations are really nice and the characters are well done.
Allthough Clannad is not the most innovative anime it is still fun to watch.
Even if you watch it just to get to Clannad After Story its not a waste of time considering how great After Story is.

It's worth watching if only to be in the know, so you can secretly judge and scoff at people who give Clannad and Clannad AS an unconditional 10/10.

But real talk, you will most likely be disappointed, but this goes for virtually any series that has such critical acclaim. I recommend just going into it expecting nothing, which is what I try to do when I start watching a so-called masterpiece, and you might find some enjoyment out of it. Otherwise, you might find yourself trying to find things to criticize and purposely closing off your heart just so you can say, "I win," when you don't cry.

A note, After Story has much clearer direction than the first season, which is a very good thing, as I found the first season quite tiresome at times.

I think that too. Sorry what I meant was that I have had friends who have dropped the series completely because they couldn't get into the first season.

The only reason I gave it a 10/10 is because I didn't think that I would enjoy a series more after watching this one. As a personal preference, so I set that bar so high.

Honestly, I'd say give them a shot. I decided to watch Clannad on a whim and I thought After Story was pretty great. Sadly, the first season is dreary and you just want it to end -- After Story is far superior. Though, the overall ending is absolute nonsense and most of the characters aren't memorable. I'd say watch it and stop when you want to.

Clannad is really an interesting anime. Even though the first 10 episodes seemed non directional but still it kept me guessing. And then suddenly it becomes really beautiful, filled with fun, joy, friendship, crush etc...
I bet you that its worth watching.
However the reason I kept watching it is actually for season 2, since MAL rated it 9.1. Atleast believe MAL.
