Hi guys :)

This is going to be somewhat of a long post, so please forgive me for any inconvenience but I want to be completely honest.

I asked this question on a lot of forums, and even on this very forum, and still didn't get an answer. In fact, if you searched for this question on google chances are the poster is me. And I also asked people that watch One Piece as well but I'm still looking for answers. And this question is one of the main reasons why I joined this forum. And I'm not doing this because of any malicious intent, I genuinely don't know the answer.

Now, the last time I posted this question was before the Episode of Skypiea special, and I'm still in the begging of the Donquixote Doflamingo arc. and I am on a long break from One Piece so I lost in touch with the series. I also had my PC formatted a while back, so I lost all of the links to the posts that had this question, so I decided to ask the question again.

In the Skypiea arc in the One Piece anime series, Enel, who is the main antagonist of that arc, says he's "god", is that true?

And if so, does he mean he’s A god, like Thor from the Marvel comic book franchise or does he mean he’s THE God, the one one that Muslims and Christians pray to?

And did any of the Straw Hat Pirates believed him?

From memory:

I’m pretty sure in skypiea its a sky island that is completely separate from the surface world.

That antagonist wasn’t always “God”. He defeated the previous “God” and he became the new one.

I’m pretty sure “God” in their case just refers to them because they were the strongest of everyone in Skypiea and ruled over them with their strength.

Obviously, they are not real gods, I mean he was defeated by pre-time skip Luffy. A real God would be on a completely different level.

No he is not a God
In skypiea the highest position is titled as God ntg more.
Like how highest position in the navy is titled fleet admiral

Any one luffy fights after in upcoming next arc (expect foxy) beats him easily with rubber gloves

He’s not a god, he thinks he is because the title of the leader in skypia is called god, so that is the reason why he thinks of himself as a god.

You might not realize this but the world of One Piece is not planet earth. There are civilizations in the sky, under the sea, and on the moons. Enel when he left to go to into space he meets up with space pirates. This is canon and was part of a cover story Oda wrote within one piece. Their version of Gods, kings, Pirates, celestial dragons, justice, etc. Is very very skewed in comparison to how we would view it so you have to look at One Piece within the lens that Oda gives us.

Each civilization has their own versions of weapons and gods etc. As far as Enel goes he is a god to the skypeia people especially after he destroyed Birka. Birka which name is derived from a civilization on the moon, which is why Enel planned to go there.

I expect you to be confused. My guess is that you’re an anime only… but all of this is answered in the manga.

Oh my god dude whats up with the preamble just ask the damn question 😂😂 anyways the answer to the question is that he was so strong that he self proclaimed that he was a god. The main antagonist is Enel and he calls himself god when he actually isn't one. There are four other real gods that the people of skypiea worship, the main one being the sun god nika who will have relevance later in the story

@Anime_Guy_88
you may have already gotten your answer but I’ll give you mine nonetheless.
It’s quite simple:

“God“ is just the monarchs (general highest) entitlement in Skypiea, who, after becoming it, lives in Gods Shrine.

That is further explained and criticised on Enel by Gan Fall (Ep180/Ch275, see first picture ad proof for that).

You seem to be able to enforce yourself onto the position (since Enel killed all henchmen of Gan Fall and defeated him with ease) or become “God“ by vote and agreement of the sky people (since Gan Fall was declared “God“ by the sky people after Enels defeat, but I need more info about how else to become a “God“).

(All following Spoiler only contain very minor information about OP but don’t effect the experience and don’t spoil anything relevant for the story or characters besides ”Mad Monk“ Urouge, who is only very little known or shown about, and Enels cover stories in the Manga)

We just don’t know much about the political systems or function of other sky societies but can assume that they are similar to Skypieas. Enels apparent origin from another sky island (Birka Ep182/Ch279), that lied in the southeast of Skypiea (was destroyed by him) and the proof that “Mad Monk“ (alias High Priest, Ep736Ch795) Monk Urouge is from (most likely) another Sky island held up with balloons (Ep736/Ch795), gives us some information.

(Title/System probably inspired by Odas One Shot Manga ”God’s gift for the future“)

Only Enels lack of wings (instead 4Tomoe Drums attached to a ring on the wings usual spot) could hint on him as a ”fallen Angel“ (ripped out or lost wings) or another origin than the skies-perhaps the moon (or so called “Endless Vearth“ by Enel) that he even travelled to,

Enels understanding and interpretation of “God“ on the other hand is different. He seems to have been a ”normal“ Sky island citizen (which I don’t believe to be true, see the hints above), until he ate the Goro Goro no mi and got his DF abilities (in his case a Logia fruit, type lightning), which he knew of to be the strongest type of DF, especially against the Skypieans (which know nothing about DFs or users). (Probably) After that he developed the (psychological term) ”God complex“ and perceives himself as a allmighty, omnipresent, omniscient and thoroughly perfect being. He even at first denied that his powers couldn’t harm Luffy for multiple times(Ep182/Ch279, see picture pannels as proof), only to realise it on the THIRD try. That proves his arrogance and not perfect but appearent knowledge about DFs or common sense (plastic x electricity), that, including Nami, thereby any normal human, seems to know (Ep182/Ch279, see picture proof with Namis comment).
That further hints at Enels alienated origin with mix of knowledge about white sea (sky) and blue sea (OP planet surface) information.
Only the fight against Luffy proves that Enel is just another “normal“ Logia DF (that he can travel through most electricity conducting materials with) user, with outstanding observation Haki, but without any allmight, omniscience or omnipresence to it.

Btw the Arc that you’re in right now is called “Dressrosa Arc“

That’s it from my part, just don’t take most titles or roles in OP too seriously. Oda takes a lot of inspiration from real life architecture, culture, societies, the bible, other Mangaka, japanese films, FanArt, FanFiction, norse/greek mythology or japanese folklore but rarely copies these things into his world! Instead he creates new meaning and systems for them, which makes his worldbuilding abilities so incredibly intriguing and interesting!
Thanks for reading, pls correct or add missing parts/context or general information.

Before some of the recent manga chapters I would have said that enel just had a god complex and that he was a god but now after these recent chapters I’m gonna say that enel is a god not THE god just like how you said he is like Thor from marvel comics

This has to be a troll post… “sorry that this post is so long” when it would take one sentence to get the exact same answers to your question. And your question is just really dumb. If you’re serious…

"God" means highest position in skypia
like how we call the head as king, captain, ruler etc..
just because the people in skypia call him god doesn't make him one
that old guy in skypia is the previous god, even thou he is weak

he is not a god he tells he is a "kami" that means god if we translate but we shouldn't because it is a different religious than cristian or muslim it is a fictional religious in an anime and the meaning of "kami" in this religion is something you can get by defeating the last "kami" so it is something more like a king than a god

nope. Enel is just really being cocky. there are only 5 gods in one piece that's been mentioned(if I remember correctly). sun god, rain god, forest god, earth god this is said in sky arc. and last wisdom king(Buddist deity) mentioned in wano.

God Ussop might have the same title but he's far stronger than them. oh you just started dressrosa arc you will see the power of God Ussop soon...

I may be completely wrong here but I just wanted to clarify something. It sounds like multiple questions.

1. Do the people in the One Piece universe believe in no gods, one god, or multiple gods? So basically, what are the religious distinctions, if any, in the universe.

2. Is there any proof of the gods that would cause the Straw Hats to think "Oh shit we are fighting one of the gods that we(except Zoro) believe in."

3. Did any of the Straw Hats believe him?

While the only answer I am confident giving is that Zoro does not believe in them and Luffy would be willing to fight a god, I would absolutely love if you were able to clarify if this is what you were asking and if anyone had answers to these questions.

The “god” of Skypiea is the equivalent of a ruler from what I gathered. Enel overthrows the previous “god” of Skypiea ( the knight with the bird-horse) and becomes the new “god” (ruler). He basically just became the dictator of Skypiea.

So no, he isn’t an actual god.
