Duo Maxwell is the funny, laid-back, and outgoing one of the five Gundam pilots who calls himself,
Shinigami (God of Death) as he is a harbinger of death upon his enemies. Despite his outgoing nature, he has experienced a terrible childhood that he doesn't let on to others. He is also a team player who cares for his comrades and does what he can to aide them in battle.
Background History
His background in his chapter in the
Episode Zero manga, in the year AC 187, he is a nameless orphan on the L2 Colony Cluster who knows nothing of any family he may of had that gets involved in a street gang and takes his name "Duo" after the gang's leader, Solo. After Solo dies of a fever, Duo and the rest of the gang are taken in by the Maxwell Church. The others were successfully adopted by families, but Duo had no luck with his foster family and he was taken back to the Church. The priest of the church, Father Maxwell and the nun, Sister Helen adopted him. Sister Helen would give Duo his braided hairstyle that becomes his trademark look. Young Duo had differences in opinion with his adopted father over the existence of God, Duo couldn't bring himself to believe in God, but rather a God of Death, as he's seen so many die. Duo would soon see death come again in the massacre that befell the church that led to the deaths of Father Maxwell and Sister Helen, caused by an incident involving a group of rebel colonists against the occupying Earth Sphere Alliance Military. From then on he took the surname Maxwell as his own.
A few years later in AC 192, he stowed away in a spaceship owned by Professor G and his Sweeper Group, he was caught but he joined them and become their Gundam pilot. In AC 195, he chose not to go through with the original plan for Operation Meteor and chose to destroy the Gundam. Due to Professor G's intervention, he gave Duo another option. With that, Duo went on his way to wage war on OZ.
Special Trivia About Duo Maxwell
-Duo was the winner of 1995's Animage Award for Favorite Male Anime Character. He was also listed as the series' top favorite character in the polls during the publication of the Gundam Wing manga series.
