X (怪盗'X') The name Kaitou 'X' (怪盗'X' - Phantom Thief 'X') wherein the X is pronounced as 'Sai', is given to him after his name from overseas - 'Monster Robber X.I.' - is literally translated into Japanese as Kaibutsu Goutou X.I. (怪物強盗X.I.) before being abbreviated by the Japanese media. In this name, the X represents his anonymity whilst the I stands for Invisible. X is a mysterious human with supernatural powers. A sufferer of amnesia, he is unable to recall his true identity or the origins of his powers and, in a desperate attempt to find one for himself, starts taking people apart and studying their insides to find out what gives someone an identity.
