ratings explained Disclaimer:It's my opinion; you don't have to agree.
You're probably here because you noticed that my mean score was lower than average.
Read on to find out why!
THIS PART IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
01 (trash) Drop. Nope. Absolutely not.
02 (horrible): Drop. Not the worst thing in the world, but pretty damn close.
03 (bad): Probable drop. Pretty damn awful.
04 (pretty bad): Anything under a five is probably going to bore me. More bad than good.
05 (average): Most series will fall into this category. They're average; very meh. Neutral.
06 (fine/ok): More good than bad, but really series is just okay. Not too noteworthy or outstanding.
07 (good): For some reason, this is the average series rating on this site; not for me. Average is 5 and 7 is good. Not great, but good. Nothing under this rating is something I would ever consider a favorite.
08 (very good): Falling just short of excellence, this series is still pretty damn good. I've enjoyed it quite a bit, but it fell short somewhere along the way.
09 (excellent): This is a great series! Maybe there were a few things I thought could be better, but it's excellent. I'd recommend them to a friend.
10 (masterpiece): Animation/art, music, characters, everything; wonderful! Plot was excellently executed. They may not be perfect, but this is the closest it gets. Please talk to me about these anime/manga, because they're undeniably my favorites and I would definitely recommend them!
The average anime is just that: average. If most anime are good, then that is the average. So in reality, this is a 1-9 scale as the average of 1 and 9 is 5, and 10 is just exceptional - beyond the boundaries of scale. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ Math.
If (series) is one of your favorites, why didn't you rate it a 09 or 10?
I place greater weight in an objective rating rather than an emotional one. The ratings I give are not based on enjoyment, but based on how good they actually were. Not every anime is original or expertly executed, but I can enjoy it regardless.
I appreciate logic and data and facts. My feelings grow and change over time - I can't properly establish a system to quantify something emotional.
What's wrong with (series)? / Why did you rate (series) so low? / (Series) isn't that bad!
Which one?
Leave a comment on my profile and ask me about it!
Why didn’t you just drop (series)? / Why did you watch (series) if you knew you weren’t going to like it?
I want to experience a variety of things.
Why do you type 01 instead of 1?
It’s neater, more uniform, and takes up the same amount of space as 10.
You're a(n) *insult*!
That's not a question, that's an insult.
What are your least favorite genres? Do you rate them lower because you dislike them?
My least favorite genres are ecchi, harem, hentai, and shoujo romance. They are my least favorite because these genres consistently produce subpar anime.
What's wrong with ecchi/harem?
I dislike it because it’s sexist. Not all the time, but usually. Women are treated like objects or prizes. Their personalities and the personalities of their love interests are tropes and nothingness. There’s minimal character development.
What about reverse harems?
They’re fucking stupid. Most of these are dating sim turned anime and what’s missing is that in the game, you fucking pick one. I don’t object to polyamorous relationships, but that’s not what these are! These are just a bunch of men falling in love with a girl that barely has a personality (same as a regular harem) for what appears to be no reason at all, and then they’re all just there being hot and there’s always a creepy one that calls her something like “Little Lamb” (UtaPri) or “Neko-chan” (Kamigami no Asobi). Like, they’re just bad. There’s no reason for this. The plot is just nothing. Nothing is happening, they just all want her and since you’re not playing the game, she doesn't pick any of them and nothing happens.
I know this sounds really emotional and I pride myself in making decisions based on reason, but I feel insulted by the producers of these series and this rant is what came of it.
You say that ecchi anime is sexist, but what about Free? Are you sure YOU’RE not being sexist here? Why is it only bad when it’s women being gawked at and sexualized?
I have so much to say that this section will likely be updated many times. Points will be bulleted for easier reading:
I am not only interested in peen. I too like teets and kitty.
There is a difference between characters being mostly nude because they’re athletes, and characters literally falling over and flashing their panties at someone. Or characters rubbing their boobs on someone. MOSTLY JUST CHARACTERS REACTING SEXUALLY TO THE BODY OF SOMEONE THAT ISN’T ASKING TO BE SEXUALIZED.
As much as I love the character designs of Free (which is something I can also appreciate in ecchi anime), I actually really loved the characters. I appreciated seeing an anime about friendship. If you’re familiar with the term CGDCT (cute girls doing cute things), that’s what this was like, but with a bit of drama.
If you think Free is sexist because Gou/Kou was never in a two-piece swimming suit, you’re ridiculous. She wasn’t on the team, and that’s not sexist either. Sports are generally divided between the gender binary, and this is no different. Plus! Gou/Kou’s character isn’t super feminine from what we’ve seen, so I didn’t really expect her to wear one.
Speaking of Gou/Kou, her adoration of muscles is fine. It’s done well. She isn’t touching them without asking or speaking lewdly of them. She isn’t making them uncomfortable, and most of all, they are idiots falling all over her.
What's wrong with shoujo romance?
Actually, it's not that I dislike shoujo romance. I actually really enjoy a well done romance, but as I mentioned previously, this genre consistently produces crap anime.
Well, what's wrong with it, you ask? Let me tell you. Shoujo romance regularly relies so heavily on the viewer and protagonist being so enamored with the love interests' looks that they completely overlook their frequently rotten and abusive personality. As a viewer, I feel insulted. Is this the kind of love they think I naively desire? It isn’t. My least favorite thing about shoujo romance is that it feels like I’m watching an abusive relationship (and I am), and I don’t like that. I want to see healthy relationships in romance!
An honorable mention is BL romance, which consistently uses non-consensual sexual acts as confessions. Rape and molestation aren’t neither romantic nor acceptable. You can argue that “no means yes” when (character) says it, but that’s also problematic. Normalizing this kind of thing not only belittles the experiences of actual sexual assault survivors, but it’s pretending that consent is fucking important! Honestly, this sucks because I fucking love BL and it really disgusts me that mangaka find it so difficult to write a healthy and consensual romance. No recommendations or examples for this one just yet, but check my manga list tags. Some of the series I read a while ago may not be tagged properly, but for the most part the non-con tag is reliable.
