Geu Yeoreum Movie

Watched twice now, and I have come away feeling even warmer the second time around.

This movie, as the other reviews have said, is the most realistic romance I've ever seen animated. It's melodramatic and poetic in narration, but only in the ways that people actually are. Scenes are almost underacted (this grew on me). The characters are messy the way we all are in our late teens/early twenties. It's tight, and doesn't drag, at only 60 minutes. There is a stunning lack of tropes. This reads like someone's actual memoir.

Another reviewer complains that the motivations of the characters were unclear, but I find it ... impossible to see it that way. Anyone who's experienced a serious relationship as an adult can see the exact ways in which our neurotic behaviors can compound under quiet duress.

From an animator's perspective, this movie is also a triumph.

BGs here are so finely rendered, some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. The lighting and composition stand out in nearly every shot, and the camera luxuriates in it. It KNOWS how amazing the art is. They capture such specific spaces in all their realistic, messy details, it feels more real than reality. The biggest flex, though, is that they'll use a BG for maybe 2, 3 seconds, before cutting to another shot, equally beautiful, never to return. I was alone watching this the second time, but I still found myself audibly exclaiming at certain shots of the city and their hometown.

The character animation, too, stands out, not because of any dramatic action sequences (though the soccer scenes are more than competent), but because of careful camera work and pacing, traits so undervalued in many modern productions. Keep an eye out for how they use POV shots as suffocating, self-conscious moments, when we are most "in their heads."

I'm rating this a nine because it succeeds in every aspect it sets out to explore, but I think this movie only resonates with people who've had to negotiate serious relationships (platonic or otherwise) with adult responsibilities over a long period of time.

Yea, sure, realism is at the front, but it felt more like the movie was created for drama purposes and thats it. Their relationship could be easily solved if Sui and Yikyeong had open communication, but the director did not go through that nuance of fleshing out their relationship. Rather, they dance around the topic of actually talking to each other and fixing their relationship.

I enjoyed the movie for the yuri aspect because that adds a touch of nuance and reality to the film. Like Yikyeong fantasizing if two women could ever get married in South ... Korea, and at the front of Sui and Yikyeongs relationship, a lot of conflict did derive from the fact that they are two women. Other than the lesbian aspect aside being the only realistic conflict in their relationship, their romance feels a bit forced. Drama just to have drama. I feel quite underwhelmed when it comes to the romance aspect of this film, I think drama would suit the films genre better.

Cinematically, this film is great, a lot of shots can be worthy of wallpaper material. The artstyle is simplistic but notable enough, such as the little details like Sui's lip cut throughout the film, or her habit of biting her lips. The colours are beautiful and blend in amazing with each other, and I loved the scenario shots.

7/10 is my justification. Its just okay, not anything too ground breaking. I would recommend this if you are desperate for yuri media, as there is not much out there, and if you want a visually pleasing film. Do not expect the story to be fantastic

It's realistic in a way that being a dumbass who can't communicate with your partner and choose to emotionally cheat on them instead is "realistic", sure. The movie had potential though it was a bit slow sometimes. Definitely inspired by The Silent Voice in how it's storyboarded but it was lacking at some parts. The writing was extremely weak, it was such an overblown misunderstanding/miscommunication. It's hard to believe that two long term friends, lovers, won't try to reach out to the other party if they're uncomfortable with something. The main character was also written awfully. She was extremely cowardly till the end. Her girlfriend ... was the opposite, she was cowardly at first but decided to become brave, strong and did her best to be independent as soon as possible so she could support the MC. MC on the other hand felt nothing but shame and frustration with her girlfriend and refused to communicate properly with her, she didn't even try to understand that her girlfriend was doing everything she can to be with her, and instead blamed her for her (MC) having interests in other people. She still doubted her gf's feelings for her even after her gf hurriedly carried her to the hospital because of her high fever. And the movie shows her seeming happy and content by the end? As if she deserved to move on?

What the hell is this bs writing? Again, yeah it's realistic, if you wanted to depict an awful and cowardly mc. There's very few yuri movies/films out there, especially when it comes to animation, but they wasted the potential this movie had with that awful writing. It could have been something due to the effort they put into the post production but the awful writing and development of the main character just gives a bad taste to the entire thing.
