Both have lovely artwork and music. They also are both science fiction and have similar mecha designs (due to sharing creative staff members).

One shouldn't really go in expecting much with the characters and plots in these two, especially when compared to other installments in both the Gundam/Macross series. But where these two OVA's excel at, they really shine - the production values, the nostalgic and incredible music, amazingly top notch animation and art for their time, and the insane action make them both worth seeing for the technical aspects alone. Both are sci-fi, mecha, and all that sort of thing, chances are if you like some of Macross or Gundam, you'll like both in many ways too.

2 of the best jetfighteranime classics out there. except for the concept that macross is a more ´universal´matter, and have state of the art tech. Betrayal, check Rilvalry, check Conflicts, sort of but in macross a new machine cause the real trouble, area 88 shows a real conflicts like in real life. Hot chick in the centre of it all, Double check that!!

Apart from both being mech series heavily drenched in romance, these two are showcases of some of the best flying sequences ever animated

The two storylines are quite different, but there is a stylistic and spiritual link to these titles. They are both contemporary to one another (early/mid 1990's) and are also "facelifts" to older franchises as a retelling or in-universe sequel. But what really strikes a similar is the design and animation of the Phoenix to the YF-21, they could have been designed by the same animators! The areal flight scenes also feel similar as well with lots of excellent explosion and armament effects.

* Both are short series that are spinoffs of a larger narrative from iconic mecha series. * Both feature top-shelf art and animation for their respective eras. * Both feature excellent soundtracks composed by former members of The Seatbelts.

-Both have exceptional quality animation, that was cutting edge for it's era, and still stand up today -Both have excellent use of music- In fact, both share similar (very effective) use of ambient, a capella, experimental music, which is skillfully integrated with some of the more visually impressive moments; both high-octane sakuga, and still shots of stuff like slow pans over a cityscape. -Both have a very 'anime' sensibility, but were also trying to appeal to a Western, adult audience. -Both have a very 'cinematic' feel, for anime; varied pacing, from fast, action-packed scenes, to beautiful, quiet, still, "atmospheric" moments; slower paced than most anime, but it never  read more

Both are about artificial idols controlled by humans. They portray Idols in a negative, critic way. Both anime (in particular key the metal idol)have psychological aspects and a cyberpunkish, sad and dark atmosphere.

Both are stories about Artificial Intelligence gone rogue, featuring idol/singer AIs. In Macross Plus, the AI idol Sharon Apple goes rogue and it is up to her human "manager" and her highschool friends to stop Sharon Apple. In Vivy: Fluorite Eyes Song. The heroine is an AI Idol and there is an AI revolution in the future which she much stop.

Macross Plus raised the bar for mecha anime in the 90s with artistry that was unlike anything I've ever seen. It is truly what Gundam could have accomplished if it ever got it's money's worth with a great director like Shinichiro Watanabe and an amazing music composer like Yoko Kanno.

Both feature a rivalry between two main characters and spectacular air duels.

They both have the same atmosphere and polish. Both are must watch anime series for any mecha/romance fan out there.

Although they achieve it in different ways, Macross Plus and Please Save My Earth will make you feel a kind of sad nostalgia thanks to Yoko Kanno's contributions to the hauntingly beautiful soundtrack.

Mecha airplane pilot stories... Both have AI's though Macross's Sharon leans toward the dark side. >.< If you like this airforce, pilot, mecha type than I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy Macross Plus.

Evangelion is known for its artistic command of scale and its ability to express a sense of enormity, contrasted with physical and psychological isolation, has yet to be surpassed in all Art. Only Gurren Lagann has transcended the physical sense of scale of Eva. The iconic climax of End of Evangelion may have been influenced by the animation of Macross Plus.

Musicians who have an oddly strong influence on the world, and are strangely tied up in jet aircraft dogfighting one way or another. Plus cute girls and great 90s-era aesthetics!

Girly Airforce uses glimpses of the legendary Itano (Air) Circus. That's the insane speed barrage of missles and dogding dog fighting planes. Ichiro Itano is the man who created this technique in the even more legendary series Macross. For a great dog fighter, watch the OVA Macross Plus. If you like any of the airial combat in Girly Airforce, and a great love story, check out Macross Plus. But don't stop there, watch *all* of the Macross series.
